Scooter found guilty
Well now the UK press will cover it as they will get another chance to bash the Bush administration. I suspect his counsel will appeal the verdict and we can expect many months more than this. For minute-by-minute coverage head over to the Media Blogger Association’s aggregator for more on this case.
Of course, political watchers in the UK have more than enough to pay attention with the increasing scandal surrounding the Blair administration seemingly closing in on Lord Levy. From my reading of both cases the scandal at the heart of the Blair government is far closer than the Libby case.

In my continuing quest to discover if there is any coverage of the Scooter Libby trial I am trying to determine why there is not real coverage of the event. Now it can be said that it will really probably not get any coverage unless there is a negative outcome against Libby. This would, of course, give the anti-American/Bush press in the UK a good chance at a good bash.
There is however something that is becoming far more important. The cash-for-peerages (places in the House of Lords) has become scandal has become rather more terse of late with some expert observers claiming there is a fair chance it will rival Watergate. The arrest of Blair’s money man and Middle East envoy Lord Levy on charges now of obstruction of justice yesterday is making the whole thing far more serious. The investigation is getting closer and closer to Blair so much so that Downing Street is starting to sweat.
Watch this space.

Is reflecting on the complete lack of interest in this trail here in the UK I am coming to the conclusion that the only way people will care in the UK is if he is found guilty. It probably matters a bit that they types of people who would be interested in this sort of imbroglio are far more interested in the current problems of Tony Blair that some are saying could be a scandal on the scale of Watergate. The latest twist concerns emails being deleted at Number 10 after the investigation had begun. The arrest of Ruth Turner has tweaked interested as well, especially in its dramatic early morning style.
As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher’s Council hold a vote every week on what they consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around… per the Watcher’s instructions, I am submitting one of my own posts for consideration in the upcoming nominations process.
Here is the most recent winning council post, here is the most recent winning non-council post, here is the list of results for the latest vote, and here is the initial posting of all the nominees that were voted on.
Doughty Street with a bit of Scooter
Last night I did a couple hour appearance on Vox Politix on 18 Doughty Street and it was the normal pleasure to inhabit their sofa during Vox Politix and the End of the Day Show. I was able to compliment Iain on their new site and design. It was a pleasure to find out that I was sharing the couch with Brian of Samizdata.com fame as well as an A-lister (who seemed purturbed there is no longer an A-list). Not terribly surprisingly Brian and I very much agreed on things except maybe his choice of classical music. I do hope they manage to get the show(s) up on Watch Again so I can see how I did. We managed to chat about the Scooter Libby Trial during the blogging part of End of Day Show. It was pleasing to hear that at least one of their viewers was following the trial and chipping in via MSN.
1 commentOn Doughty Street again…
The lads & laddetes at 18 Doughty Street finally have their new website up for your perusal. Its a bit delayed but seems to be worth the wait for both the channel and the rest of us. I am appearing on their couch from 10-12 this evening to their live feed as both part of Vox Politix and the End of the Day Show. So if you have the time please have a gander and tell me what you think (as you always do). I will perusing the blogs to see what is getting their goats to discuss on the show. I will endeavor to get the Scooter Libby Trial discussed as it has not got much coverage on this side of the pond yet. For those of you on this side of the pond wonder what the fuss is about here is the MBA round-up.
1 commentScooter Libby less redux
It must shock some of my American readers that the MSM and blogs in the UK are passing up this wonderful chance to bash Bush and the war in Iraq. It seems they are currently being placated by the fact they can bash white working class people because of the Big Brother row. Instead of just seeing Jade Goody as a celebrity obsessed knuckledragging moron they are trying to portray her as an example of what is wrong with “normal” people in the UK. Its a bit of the case of a bit insular societal self-destruction. The fact that the Big Brother row ranks higher in the news order than the trial of the 21/7 bombers.
A nice bit of news: the AP is using the MBAs feed for the Scooter Libby trial.

I am supposed to be covering the Scooter Libby trial in the UK press. Well, as far as I can tell, there is nowt of it abowt. The entire press corps is rather more concerned with two things depending on their audience. The first is on-going row/international incident/clusterf**k called Big Brother and the bullying racist behaviour of one Jade Goody. Channel 4, the parent station of the show, are in so-called crisis talks to discuss the future of the show. Not normally that interesting to a US audience two of the show’s contestants are Jermaine Jackson (forgot his new Muslim name) and Dirk “Faceman” Benedict who looks to have a good shot at winning the show.
The second, slightly more important story, at least in the long-run, is the fact that a close aide to Prime Minister Tony Blair has been arrested for perverting the course of justice in regards to the on-going Cash for Peerages scandal. The Sunday papers will full of the news that the policeman who led the arresting team has been harrassed by number 10 and Labour suppoters. If you are interested in this story I would highly recommend the coverage at Guido’s site. He has been on this story for quit e a long time and has rather good predictive powers when it comes to Labour’s legal problems. Some in the press have been wheeling out Watergate comparisons.

Here is the Media Bloggers Association feed for the bloggers covering it. I will be covering the trial and how it is viewed by British bloggers and press in the UK (and English language in other parts of Europe). I will be part of the MBA members casting a critical eye over the whole affair. So please check back here if you are interested in the l’affaire Scooter.
