Why is the Great British Pub disappearing?

Any regular visitor to – and in my case former resident of – London has surely noticed the slow death of pub culture. Local pubs are disappearing at an alarming rate replaced by wine bars, cafes, and even flats. It has gotten to the point where it is now noticeably more difficult to navigate the streets by using pubs as landmarks.
