Cameron proved us right…

David Cameron has fully screwed the right and the eurosceptics in the Conservative Party. In a move that does not surprise me he has brought back the arch-Europhile Ken Clarke to the shadow cabinet. The timing is foolish as poll after poll is showing that scepticism and hostility to the EU is ever increasing in the British public. Not least after the EU decided to consider emergency power to take over the UK’s gas and oil supplies.

Clarke’s addition will re-open old wounds over Europe in the party between the federast elites and the grassroots who are over-whelmingly against further integration, the Euro and all other machinations of Europe. His appointment proves all the sceptics right that claimed that Cameron was a faux-Eurosceptic. If Cameron wanted to prove to all how out of touch he is with his own party this is move that does it.

Why would he possibly want to revive all the problems associated with this self-important dinosaur?

There is one benefactor however. UKIP will be pleased to see the return of Ken Clarke to give them a cudgel to bash the Conservatives with. Between Cameron’s MEPs completely flouting party policy, with a few notable exceptions like Dan Hannan, and now this Cameron has proven why many in the party never trusted the man in the slighest.

Its almost ensures a hung parliament or a small majority for the Conservatives. Maybe this is the plan so he can go into coalition with the pro-EU Liberal Democrats and be “forced” into more pro-EU policies.

Update: DK goes into more depth why Clarke is a very bad choice for the Shadow Cabinet. England Expects predicts Tories leaving to join UKIP in droves.

Update II: That didn’t take long. Clarke is already meddling in the Conservatives EU policy.

You’re absolutely right to point out the stupidity of bringing KC back. If anything Dave needs to move further right in response to the appalling mess he will inherit in May 2010.

of course, if you are realistic - Ken Clarke does not really shift the shadow cabinet any further to the left.
