Cuba: 50 years of failure…

December 31st, 2008 | Category: Politics

New Year’s Day marks 50 years of communist rule in Cuba. The Castro oligarchy will trumpet its survival and celebrate. But the reality, up close, is that it’s the longest-running failure in the New World.

From a great piece on IDB.

A very good piece, by Fausta, over Real Clear World blog.

Dumbest anti-Israel headline so far…

December 30th, 2008 | Category: Anti-Semitism/Jewery

What Israel is doing is nothing to do with peace but its own selfish security concerns

from London Daily News

So protecting one’s citizens from death by rocket attack is selfish? What else is a country supposed to be doing for their citizens then? And here was me thinking protecting the citizens is one of the main jobs of any state.

Update: More on so-called proportionality.

Update II: VDH has written a great piece called Surreal Gaza about the bizarre world of reporting on the conflict.

War on Xmas distraction…

December 29th, 2008 | Category: Anti-Semitism/Jewery, ROPMA, Religion, Terrorism

Every year we hear people like O’Reily and others bleating on about the “war on Christmas” across the country. By any rational view its nothing like a war and more like minor local skirmishes. What these people should really be concerned with the is the actual war against their fellow believers in places like Sudan, India, the Middle East and wait for it, Bethlehem itself.

I believe since some of the major Christian organisations are sycophants to Islamists that the reason they ignore these problems is because they might have to confront their view of Muslims and Jews.

Then again when you have supposedly sane Christians saying that the only reason Christians around the world are under attack is because of the US/UK’s support for Israel you wonder if there is any hope at all.

The Tropical Fish Tank Hobby

Home aquariums look like living pictures. They are relaxing and soothing to watch, and they bring living nature into your home. Raising fish in the home aquarium teaches children the importance of ocean conservation. Their interest in fish helps ensure a future with healthy oceans and abundant marine life. Fish will thrive in your home aquarium, if you provide them with natural living conditions, take care of them properly and give them the right food.
[home aquarium] Aquarium Fish Are An Interesting Hobby

[freshwater home aquarium] Many species reproduce in the aquarium, court lavishly and take diligent care of their young. The majority scatter large numbers of fertilized eggs randomly. But live-bearing guppies and swordtails give birth to large, living, self-sufficient “fry”. The bodies of most fish are covered with scales like roof shingles to protect against enemies. Fish use fins to remain upright in water and to move forward. Some fish have a sense of touch in their fins, and also use them in courtship displays. The gills of the fish breathe the oxygen dissolved in the water. A few fish, like catfish, can also breathe in the air. Fish have eyes for vision, and a snout, skin folds or whiskers used to smell and taste. They hear well and communicate with sounds or pressure waves.”

Israel has had enough…goes after Gaza…

December 27th, 2008 | Category: Anti-Semitism/Jewery

It seems Gazans want war and they now got one, expect the whining to have already begun. It was amazing how many rockets Israel withstood before they replied with gusto.

Or as one wag put it (obviously Israeli): Turn the other cheek ain’t in our Bible.

If this is true boy are Hamas dumb.

NB: Found a new game…Israel does something to defend itself…then watch the anti-semities start rant…if on Twitter, un-follow. Good way of reducing the dross on your Twitter feed.

Some might find the #Gaza feed on Twitter. You can RSS follow it as well. Expect Israel/Jew hatred in plain view on this thread.

Rioting outside Israeli embassy in London because Israel has had the temerity to defend itself.

Ron Paul is not the answer…

December 27th, 2008 | Category: Anti-Semitism/Jewery, Politics

Or to put it another way.

Ron Paul is Not the Answer, Unless the Question is “Who Can Destroy the Republican Party for the Rest of My Lifetime?”

Jimmie sets out a clear & concise case why Ron Paul is bad for the Republican Party. Expect a mad rush of enraged Paulians at this throat very soon.

Not all of what Paul says is objectionable, but most of his supporters I have encountered certainly are.

Update: Mike is less charitable in the light of Ron Paul’s recent statements about Israel. And here is Ron Paul on video talking about Israel… his defenders, aka Paulians, declare he is “telling the truth.”

Lately, a lot of the discussion has rightfully centered on policy. Earlier, Jon Henke asked us to consider what policies we should advocate and support. I’ve spent some time outlining a theme for a new set of items we can go forward with: the Agenda of Equal Opportunity. Although I would much rather talk about substance than rhetoric…

Sam presents Famous Photographers and Their Work. posted at Surfer Sam and Friends, saying, “Famous Photographers and Their Work
Explaining the World in Photos
These famous photographers were not born artists. They studied their craft throughout life, practicing how to tell a story through a lens. They sought out landscapes, street action, sports and portrait subjects. While they worked behind the camera, they learned technique and composition. Through their photos they tell us about the world and about ourselves. Alfred Stieglitz, 1864 –1946, spent his fifty-year career promoting photography as art form, comparable to painting and sculpture. With financial support from his family, he was able to dedicate his working life entirely to photography. The defining moment of his life was his marriage to the painter Georgia O’Keefe. He made over 300 images of his wife, which are often cited as his greatest work. Pictured is Georgia O’Keeffe.”

Marsha Hudnall presents Women’s Weight Loss: ‘Tis the Season to Be Kind posted at A Weight Lifted, saying, “I had a wonderful interaction with a family member this morning. Amazingly, it was echoed in my horoscope today on DailyOM, the site I’ve mentioned before that is often uncannily relevant to what’s going on in my life. Won’t get into the generality of horoscopes — I know they often can apply to anyone. But the words I get in a daily e-letter from DailyOM seem to go beyond that.

But to my real reason for even mentioning this. The horoscope talks about doing something for others with a ‘kind and open heart.’ It brought to mind for me the need for women struggling with body image and healthy weight loss and maintenance to be kind to themselves. Because once we begin to treat ourselves gently, we find we can treat others much more gently — especially those with similar struggles. And when it comes to healthy lifestyle management, fitness and diet, there’s a real need for gentle treatment.

Of course, one of the things we’re most tough on ourselves about during the holiday season is our desire to eat all the great treats of the season — and our indulgence in doing it. So it bears repeating on this blog that is all about learning to take care of ourselves well, that indulgence is good for us in moderation. So go ahead, indulge! Here are a few tips from our article “Go Ahead, Indulge!” that talks about holiday overeating.

Feed yourself.
Be choosy.
Eat mindfully.
Cultivate a discriminating palate.
Keep moving.
Enjoy the season!
For details on doing all that, read our Fitbriefing that defines healthy weight loss foods a bit differently.”

Incidentally there was a brief mention in ‘The Daily Mail’ that there is a sharp rise (up to 50%) in cold and flu infections this week and this is quite likely to blight the Christmas break. So if don’t want the cold/flu bug to ruin your Christmas week, see to it that you follow these precautions scrupulously and yes, prevention is always better than cure.

Madman in a Dinner Jacket delivers…

December 24th, 2008 | Category: ROPMA, Terrorism, The Media/BBC idiocies

Your Christmas Cheer. Yeah, I am not kidding, Channel 4 had Iran’s loon who wants to “wipe Israel off the map” deliver its alternate Christmas message.

Damian Thompson finds it equally appalling.

Channel 4 tried to get Beelzebub but didn’t have his number.

Oh yes and Channel 4 is attempting to get more public money right now.

Good piece on the whole row by Meir Javedanfar.

Damian Thompson makes this point that is just another example of indulging Islam in the UK. And seeing this type of thing I can’t understand why he could think that way.

Mary’s Boy Child

December 24th, 2008 | Category: Gnotalex, Music, Video

Harry Belafonte is still a raging moonbat, but IMO this is one of the prettiest Christmas songs ever recorded. I was curious, so I looked the song up on Wikipedia.

Long time ago in Bethlehem
So the Holy Bible say
Mary’s boy child, Jesus Christ
Was born on Christmas day.

Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new King born today
And man will live forever more
Because of Christmas day.

While shepherds watched their flock by night
And see a bright new shining star
And hear a choir sing
The music seem to come from afar.

Now Joseph and his wife Mary
Come to Bethlehem that night
They found no place to bear her child
Not a single room was in sight.

Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new King born today
And man will live forever more
Because of Christmas day.

By and by they find a little nook
In a stable all forlorn
And in a manger cold and dark
Mary’s little boy was born.

Hark, now hear the angels sing
A new King born today
And man will live forever more
Because of Christmas day.

I’ve got places to go and people to see over the next few days. So I’ll wish you all a Merry Christmas and I’ll see you in the (Happy?) New Year.

O’Sullivan on Palin as Thatcher…

December 23rd, 2008 | Category: Politics

Inevitably, Bentsen’s famous put-down of Dan Quayle in the 1988 vice-presidential debate is resurrected, such as by Paul Waugh in the London Evening Standard. “Governor, You’re No Maggie Thatcher,” sneered Mr. Waugh. Jolly, rib-tickling stuff. But, as it happens, I know Margaret Thatcher. Margaret Thatcher is a friend of mine.

A refreshing rebuke to those on the right who criticise her.
