Muslim rapper Deeyah says she has been intimidated and sent death threats while she has been attempting to establish herself in the music industry. She told New Statesman: “In many Muslim communities, there is virtually no support for young women who want to express themselves as creative artists. It’s not one of the professions expected of a woman. Many are actively discouraged from expressing their thoughts and dreams through music. A big part of the problem is the cultural expectations placed upon women. There is the association of music with sexuality and a westernised form of expression”.
Deeyah has now set up a new project for Muslim women in music, through which she has released a mixtape featuring eighteen upcoming artists. Deeyah said: “The main aim I had in putting together the Sisterhood project was to let young Muslim girls know they are not alone in their struggles to get their music out there”.

Iain has written a good piece on DD’s re-election. His win was not exactly in doubt; however the near 35% turnout was quite a shock to the Westminster Village.
The media and the village still scoff at entire endeavor. They have cited the cost and the fact there were 26 candidates standing. However those who actually care about their rights have continued to laud the man.
Here is his acceptance speech.
