The article refers to plasmids, which calls to mind one of the more bizarre incidents lately to occur on the campus of the University of Chicago (a place hosting many bizarre incidents—recall, the place where a group of graduate students on a 1942 bender built the first atomic pile under the football bleachers). In 1993, a Pritzker Medical School researcher was working on certain theoretical applications of the F-plasmid, specifically asexual human reproduction. One day the researcher disappeared, perhaps abducted by one or more individuals referring to themselves as “temporal trespassers” (time travelers?) in a cryptic but apologetic note left behind. Several years later, the note produced a DNA sample matching that of the then young child of the missing researcher. Ver-ry inter-resting.
