Moronski: on to Denver
Super Tuesday Redux… or as we call it in the trade “Groundhog Day II,” has come and gone. The press is hailing Hillary as the big victor, the “comeback kid” off her victories in the Republic of Texas, the center of the universe (Ohio), and Family Guy land (Rhode Island). Barack pulled off a big win in Ben & Jerry Country (Vermont), or as we lovingly refer to it here as “Woodstock,” but I digress.
(By the way, John McCain clinched the GOP nomination. In other news, sun rises in east.)
So what does it all mean??? Not much.
Contrary to conventional media spin, Hillary was never pulling out of this race. Her ambition burns brighter than ever and the last thing she is going to do is lose to this guy, elected delegates be damned. The race goes on.
The latest delegate count, not including the 796 so-called “superdelegates” (elected and party officials) that can change their mind any time, has Obama up 1,366 to 1,222. Not including penalized states Florida and Michigan (more on them later), a total of 2,025 delegates are needed to win. There are only 611 elected delegates left to compete for. Even if one candidate won ALL of these delegates—an impossibility since delegates are generally awarded by proportional results. In short, the superdelegates will sort this one out.
Enjoy this moment as primary elections reaching this deep into the calendar happen once every few decades as we journey to spots the national media never dreamed of covering. After Mississippi next Tuesday (a likely Obama victory), PENNSYLVANIA becomes the center of the universe. Think about it… cheesesteaks, “Free Mumia,” the “Terrible Towel,” “33,” the Amish, funnel cakes, Yuengling, Deliverance (wait, sorry, that’s West Virginia in May), the WORST interstate highways in America… enough. You will get your fill of this state until April 22(!)
But PA won’t decide it… and neither will the remaining states. BUT, there is now talk of “do-over” primaries in MI and FL to make up for their whining about having their delegates stripped for holding elections before the Democrat National Committee permitted them to. There is potential for two big primaries sometime in mid-June. Even with that, this will likely be decided on the convention floor in Denver. Unless, something happens to one of the candidates.
She is a Clinton. Anything is possible.
