Pondering the Google slap
The last few months have been rather tough for those people who have been trying to make some money via the popularity of their blogs. In some cases Google has managed to completely eliminate a bloggers ability to earn any substantial money to for the upkeep of their blog or even a few extra bucks.
In some cases, like this one, Google took a page rank and reduced it by 50% from 6 to 3. This decimated any ability to earn and caused a complete rethink in how the blog functions. Its fortunate that Google waited until after I got married to do this as I used some of the funds I earned via the blog to help pay for both my wedding and the honeymoon.
That said Google’s timing for me could not have been worse as I now have a rather large medical bill after having an operation to eliminate my colon cancer in November. Finding out you have cancer, getting a large chunk of your colon cut out and having your blog’s earning power skewered in one month is pretty rough.
I have spoken to many fellow bloggers during my recovery who have been hit as hard or near as hard by Google’s actions. We are rethinking our blog strategies and looking to other ways to maximise our assets online. It was not the most pleasant end of year for some.
Saying that bloggers are quite a hardy lot and are finding ways round these problems. It has taken a while but bloggers are getting back on their feet and looking to the future. With the help of sites like Izea and the various other advice sites/forums 2008 bloggers will survive stronger than ever.
As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher’s Council hold a vote every week on what they consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around… per the Watcher’s instructions, I am submitting one of my own posts for consideration in the upcoming nominations process.
Here is the most recent winning council post, here is the most recent winning non-council post, here is the list of results for the latest vote, and here is the initial posting of all the nominees that were voted on.
