The foolish Greenie rush to generalizations

November 12th, 2007 | Category: Politics

As the Greenies are now learning, even strong statistical correlations may disappear if a longer time series is used. A remarkable example from Sociology:

“The modern literature on hate crimes began with a remarkable 1933 book by Arthur Raper titled The Tragedy of Lynching. Raper assembled data on the number of lynchings each year in the South and on the price of an acres yield of cotton. He calculated the correlation coefficient between the two series at 0.532. In other words, when the economy was doing well, the number of lynchings was lower…. In 2001, Donald Green, Laurence McFalls, and Jennifer Smith published a paper that demolished the alleged connection between economic conditions and lynchings in Rapers data. Raper had the misfortune of stopping his analysis in 1929. After the Great Depression hit, the price of cotton plummeted and economic conditions deteriorated, yet lynchings continued to fall. The correlation disappeared altogether when more years of data were added.”

So we must be sure to base our conclusions on ALL the data. In the Greenie case, the correlation between CO2 rise and global temperature rise stopped in 1998—but that could have been foreseen if measurements taken in the first half of the 20th century had been considered.

Attention Zionists at Work !!!

November 12th, 2007 | Category: Politics

I didn’t grok that Flicker could be used as a ersatz blog: just upload a picture and start carping around it. But here is an unexciting, albeit pitiful, wail from Ben Heine, he of the Iranian Holocaust cartoon competition fame.

Another Victim of the Zionist Lobby

No more and no less. Ehehe….

To put things straight, dear Ben: a cockroach squashed by a bulldozer can call itself a victim of industrial revolution with more reasons than you can call yourself a victim of this or any other lobby. A fart in a hurricane would be more apt as a description of your miserable life story…

In fact, all operatives of the Elders’ field units are under strict order to keep a safe distance.

It is the smell, you know.

Leftist psychopathy

November 12th, 2007 | Category: Politics

There is a very clear post here on Obama’s “flexibility” over what he believes in. He shows himself as being completely psychopathic but, like psychopaths generally, he cannot see what is wrong with having no real principles, consistency or beliefs at all. And there’s the story of another prominent leftist here who advocates lying in order to get elected and then breaking all your promises. Psychopathy is endemic to Leftism, sadly.

A truly loony Leftist blog

November 12th, 2007 | Category: Politics
The “Think Progress” blog claims to be “non-partisan” but also claims to promote “progressive” ideas. So apparently it is Leftist and impartial at the same time. Maybe that makes sense to Leftists but logic obviously took a holiday from there a long time ago. In a recent effusion, they describe a TV weatherman who doubts global warming as “discredited” but give no information about how, when or why he became discredited. They say that his expertise in weather is not enough to qualify him to talk about climate. Apparently you have to have qualifications in climatology to talk informatively about climate. That requirement does exclude both Al Gore and the writers of Think Progress from commenting on climate but, with their usual freedom from logic, they do not seem to see that at all. Amy Ridenour and Noel Sheppard rub it in. No comments
