Finally!

November 09th, 2007 | Category: Politics

Call me shallow or call me a partisan (which I take as a compliment), but this just warmed my heart:

“Do they want to bring back Saddam Hussein, these critics?” the elder Bush told USA TODAY in a rare interview. “Do they want to go back to the status quo ante? I don’t know what they are talking about here. Do they think life would be better in the Middle East if Saddam were still there?”

Hey! It’s OK to Stomp other Flags

November 09th, 2007 | Category: Politics

Not just the U.S. flag:

“The 417,000 students at California State University’s 28 campuses are expected to be civil to one another, the university says in its policy manual. It sounds innocuous – but a federal magistrate says it’s an unconstitutional restriction on speech when the policy is used to investigate or discipline students, such as the College Republicans whose members stomped on two flags bearing the name of Allah during an anti-terrorism rally at San Francisco State last year.

“It might be fine for the university to say, ‘Hey, we hope you folks are civil to one another,’ ” U.S. Magistrate Wayne Brazil said last week at a hearing in his Oakland courtroom. “But it’s not fine for the university to say, ‘If you’re not civil, whatever that means, we’re going to punish you.’ ”

Brazil said he would issue a preliminary injunction barring the university from enforcing the civility standard in any disciplinary proceeding. He said the university can continue to enforce another rule disputed by the College Republicans – prohibiting intimidation or harassment – but can use the rule to punish students only for threatening someone’s health or safety, and not merely for offensive statements or conduct…..

“Universities routinely use policies like (the California State University policy) to suppress Christian and conservative speech,” said attorney David Hacker of the Alliance Defense Fund, a Christian nonprofit law firm that represents the San Francisco State College Republicans. As a result of Brazil’s ruling, he said, “all students are more free to express their ideas.”

More Whacky Liberal Media Bias

November 09th, 2007 | Category: Politics

Endless furrowed brows and implied tsk-tsking from the media over events in Pakistan; meanwhile, I’m reading about events closer to home, namely Venezuala. Evidently Hugo Chavez has decided he knows best and is on his way to being El Presidente for Life.

Gently fuming about this a couple days ago, I was pleased to see none other then Oliver North make the very same observation in A Tale of Two Coups:

“Its been a tough week for democracy and American diplomacy. In Pakistan, President Pervez Musharraf pulled a coup against himself and U.S. diplomats were apparently stunned. In Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez pulled a coup against his countrymen and U.S. diplomats were once again, well – stunned. The difference in political attention and media coverage accorded these two affairs has been—for lack of a better word—stunning.”

Rafsanjani the “moderate” - not wanted by Interpol

November 09th, 2007 | Category: Politics

The mills of international law grind slowly, if they grind at all. Thirteen years after the bombing of the Jewish center in Buenos Aires in which 85 people were killed, Interpol makes its first move.

Despite heavy diplomatic pressure from Iran, delegates at the world police body’s annual general assembly in Morocco voted by 66 percent in favor of issuing the “Red Notices” seeking the extradition of the wanted people, delegates said.
But, as it goes in politics, expediency gets the upper hand.
Argentina ordered an international warrant last year for the arrest of former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and eight other Iranians on charges of masterminding the attack.
And:
Interpol said in March that it would issue its own wanted notices against six people, leaving out Rafsanjani.
So, the “moderate” darling of Juan Cole and other sorry sycophants gets scot-free.

Too bad.

Jimmah The Catter

November 09th, 2007 | Category: Bloody insane stuff, Guns & other weaponry

Jimmy Carter in a letter to sister-in-law Sybil (widow of brother Billy):

funny_lolcat

Lamentably, I killed your cat while trying just to sting it. It was crouched, as usual, under one of our bird feeders & I fired from some distance with bird shot. It may ease your grief somewhat to know that the cat was buried properly with a prayer & that Ill be glad to get you another of your choice.

I called & came by your house several times. We will be in the Dominican Republic until Thursday. Ill see you then.

Love, Jimmy

Idiot. Bird shot is a rather poor choice to “sting” a cat with. Rock salt I could see (and in nothing bigger than a .410-gauge); better still a Super Soaker with half-a-cup of ammonia or bleach added to the water. Further story here.
