ES gets it so wrong…

July 13th, 2007 | Category: Growing Old Disgracefully, UK Politics

The Evening Standard Londoner’s Diary has discovered the video and someone has not done their research about my band GoD being on the soundtrack with Cry Freedom, even quoting the lyrics. They seemed to have been unable to find the announcement on Lee’s site announcing his selection of GoD’s track as his theme-song.

A bit of basic research would have gone a long way on this one. As far as I am concerned its so pathetically wrong its amusing. Here is the complete wording of the piece.

Election Fight hits YouTube

Aspiring London Mayoral Candidate Lee Rotherham pledges to abolish City Hall in the unlikely event he gets elected. But that hasnt stopped Rotherham from becoming embroiled in a cronyism row over his bid being used to advance the musical career of one of his pals.

Rotherham has posted a video outlining his manifesto on YouTube. The five minute broadcast was produced and edited by Rotherhams friend Andrew Ian Dodge, and American London based computer games consultant and blogger.

The broadcast is accompanied by a rock song called Cry Freedom by an unsigned band Growing Old Disgracefully. (Sample lyrics Doncha run just cry freedom/dont let the bastards grind you down/doncha run just cry freedom/theyll never take this from this town.)

The lead vocalist and songwriter of Growing Old Disgracefully happens to be Andrew Ian Dodge.

Essentially, Dodge took advantage when making Rotherhams mayoral video to promote his band who, quite frankly, wont be number one on this Sunday Im told. Theyre mentioned in the broadcast credits but no connection is made linking them with Dodge. The whole thing is, well, extremely dodgy.

I believe Lee has asked for a clarification and correction of the blatant errors in the piece. We shall see if that comes about. I have also written to them expressing my disgust with the piece. It did not seem to make the “West End Final” on Friday.

Update: The ES has not seen fit to correct their libelous statements.

With allies like these, who needs enemies?

n the West’s battle against the malign forces of Islamic extremism, no countries are more important than Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. This is where al-Qa’eda and its affiliates have their bases, and this is where, as the recent failed terror attacks in Britain have shown, impressionable young Muslims are mostly radicalised and trained…

Beyond the (Con) Dome

July 13th, 2007 | Category: Money

The TPA has a new report on just how over-budget the government is on all their big projects. It makes for sobering, if unsurprising, reading for all those who wonder why taxes are so high in the UK right now.

Boris the saviour?

July 13th, 2007 | Category: UK Politics

Conservatives are all a twitter about whether or not Boris will run for mayor. There still seems to be some doubt about whether or not he has confirmed. The Conservatives right now seem obsessed with celebrity, desperate to have one run for them for mayor.

Bizarrely there are even those who want the sleazy Norris to run again as if his losing before was not a big enough clue he can’t win.

I can just imagine what Ken & Co is going to get as far as counter campaigning on the left. They will call him a toff, a fool or worse. I like Boris quite a bit but don’t see him as a serious candidate for mayor. The Tories need to select someone with good ideas who has the nouse to put them into practice. Lee is a serious thoughful man who knows what it takes to fight Islamism; surely in this time of terrorist threat selecting someone who has served is a good idea?

It will be hard to beat Ken, no matter how much we loath the terrorist/dictator loving Jew-hating wretch.

They Can’t All Be As Diplomatic As, Say, Arafat

July 13th, 2007 | Category: Political Correctness, Politics

Dallas Morning News (article has been updated, so paragraphs are out of sequence):

In a keynote speech at the International Women’s Peace Conference on Wednesday night, Ms. [Betty] Williams told a crowd of about 1,000 that the Bush administration has been treacherous and wrong and acted unconstitutionally.

“Right now, I could kill George Bush,” she said at the Adam’s Mark Hotel and Conference Center in Dallas. “No, I don’t mean that. How could you nonviolently kill somebody? I would love to be able to do that.”

She apologized for her remarks today, blaming them on her “passionate” nature.

The Secret Service did not immediately return a call about whether it is investigating the comments.

The Bush administrations response was blunt.

“That’s surprisingly hostile rhetoric coming from someone who has been recognized for promoting peace and doesn’t warrant further comment,” said White House spokesman Blair Jones.

Hostile, yes; but not very surprising. Just over a year ago, she had this to say in Australia:

On July 24, 2006, while delivering a speech at the Earth Dialogue forums, Williams told school children at the Brisbane City Hall, “I have a very hard time with this word ‘non-violence,’ because I don’t believe that I am non-violent.” She went on to say, “Right now, I would love to kill George Bush”, blaming him for the deaths of children, particularly in the Middle East.

Far from being some kind of spontaneous outburst, it rather seems part of her standard stump speech. Maybe the Secret Service could recommend some anger-management courses when they drive her out to the airport.

As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher’s Council hold a vote every week on what they consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around… per the Watcher’s instructions, I am submitting one of my own posts for consideration in the upcoming nominations process.

Here is the most recent winning council post, here is the most recent winning non-council post, here is the list of results for the latest vote, and here is the initial posting of all the nominees that were voted on.
