Pondering Threat

Pondering Threat
by Andrew Ian Dodge

Lft. Watkins stared out the starboard side of the ship staring at the
blackend shape off in the long distance.

The shape moved as if it pulsed, long arms of black willowing. It
struck the former sea-faring Navy man as octopoid in feature. His mind
quickly discounted an octopus is space…

As shrilll calls became louder and louder about imminent breach on
the starboard he could not help but feel it was a distraction.

“Damnit the threat is coming from the wrong side!” His mind screamed
to himself as readied himself for the forthcoming fight.

“All to hands to armsincoming breach from unidentified ship,” it
continued, “this is not a drillstage red.”

“Sir, you coming”behind Lft Watkins, “they are about to break through
sirsir?...sir?”

“Sgt Ralph come over to this window,” Lft Watkins barked, “look out
that window and tell me if you see anything.”

‘But Sir?” came the anguished Sgt’s reply.

“Sgt, a few seconds more will not mean the diference between defeat or
victoryhe paused,..”now damnit or you will be on report!”

The Sgt felt the glare of Lft gaze and did not dare to give just a
cursury glance.

“Well Sgt?”

“Sir I see something odd butit must be a lights playing tricks on us
Sir,” he replied almost sheepishly.

“But you do see something?”

“Yes Sir!” The Sgt twitched as he continued to view the object.

“Excellent remember what you saw and file a report after the
battleunderstood Sgt.?”

“Yes, Lft,” he paused, “I think we must go now Lft!”

“Thank you Sgt,” the Lft adjusted his body armour and checked his
weapons one last time, “and may God helps us all.”

The normally non-religious Sgt found himself replying: ‘Amen Lft!”
They left the room with evil glaring at their backs.
