Cameron was a stoner?

Category: Drugs, UK Politics

Who gives a shit really? I mean the Daily Mail going after him for this will probably help not hurt him. Cameron alas is doing the daft thing and refusing to comment does he not realise that is he said yeah that was me they would go away as it won’t be a story anymore? If the story has legs they will probably delve into what he was up to at Oxford. There are people reading this blog who probably know more than I about that….maybe even some of them were there when it went on.

Althought he saying to Sky News…”you can stick a camera up my nose” was a bit odd.

The new Tory logo?

In news management terms I think Cameron has this one right. If he says “Yes I did it and what is more, I don’t think I did anything wrong.” he would open up a huge debate with the authoritarian tabloids and the New Labour spinmeisters going for him. The question would be about whether he thinks there should be one law for ordinary people and another law for posh Etonians, or on the other hand is he calling the whole law on drugs into question and undermining the rule of law since he is admitting to a crime and saying that it is OK to break the law. Now I have a sneaking suspicion that Dave is a bit more libertarian on the cannabis question than he feels it is wise to let on in his position. That is why the Ron Davies line “It was a moment of madness which I deeply regret … ” will not work for him either. He is carefully avoiding condemning personal recreational drug use which would slam the door shut on future liberalisation. I don’t blame him for wanting to close the debate down. His job is to try to win the next election for the Tories.
