Famous shake once removed?

January 09th, 2007 | Category: Amusements

Danny Finklestein is holding a bit of a contest to find the best hand shake once removed. Of course, Iain Dale, from where I found the link thinks it would be amusing if this were run by the Sun. For my part the first one that comes to mind is that my Grandfather Locke shook hands with Issac Asimov. Those of you who like SF would find this interesting or students of Shakespeare.

Will the Muslim Rep. stand up?

January 09th, 2007 | Category: Politics, ROPMA, Women

For the plight of women in Iran. Dymphna of the Gates of Vienna has written him an open letter and asks that others contact him about this issue. The prides himself on being the first Muslim in Congress so lets see if he can do anything to help the plight of Iranian women under Madman Inadinnerjacket. Rep Ellison took the oath of office on the Koran, which he shouldn’t have able to do in my opinion, so he needs to show us why that was a good idea and do something useful.

Soaps a’ singing

January 09th, 2007 | Category: Music

It must be really hard for those watching ITV’s Soapstar Superstar, especially if they are at all interested in cricket. You see the two Aussies are kicking some major arse and should by rights (which means neither probably will) win the compeition with no problems. What is most amusing is that the Fletch from Neighbors, an older guy, is showing the rest of em’ how it is done. Mark Furze ain’t have bad either…not only is the bloke good looking for the ladies but the bloke is a bloody metaller. He has been seen wearing Anthrax ‘Among the Living’ t-shirt and an old Van Halen tee (none of the new bollocks for him). One of his soapmates from Oz even said that he is likes the harder stuff like Metallica and Whitesnake.

Why am I watching the mostly camp show? For a couple of reasons…first of all I love hearing the judges, well except for that bimbo in the middle, being blunt and secondly it sure beats that load of bollocks ‘Just the Two of Us on the Beeb. Oh yes and its fun to watch the voting public being evil and vote for a song the soapstar has no prayer of singing.

And the screaming queen is who won it. No shock there. The singer who should have won made it to the last three thankfully but I knew he wouldnt win for three reasons: 1. he’s straight 2. he’s an Aussie 3. he’s a rocker.

Homo Barbiemalibuensis

January 09th, 2007 | Category: Humor

A man finds what he thinks are archeological treasures in his backyard and forwards them to the Smithsonian for analysis. To his discovery of a “hominid skull” the Smithsonian responds:

1. The material is molded plastic. Ancient hominid remains are typically fossilized bone.

2. The cranial capacity of the specimen is approximately 9 cubic centimeters, well below the threshold of even the earliest identified proto-hominids.

3. The dentition pattern evident on the “skull” is more consistent with the common domesticated dog than it is with the “ravenous man-eating Pliocene clams” you speculate roamed the wetlands during that time. This latter finding is certainly one of the most intriguing hypotheses you have submitted in your history with this institution, but the evidence seems to weigh rather heavily against it. Without going into too much detail, let us say that:

A. The specimen looks like the head of a Barbie doll that a dog has chewed on.

B. Clams don’t have teeth.

Alas, it’s just an urban legend, albeit a minor comic masterpiece. The full letter and some background details are here.

New Apple stuff

January 09th, 2007 | Category: Technology

Being the Apple fan that I am…having been using Jobs & Co’s kit since they had any I will be watching the coverage on MacRumors. Its annoying there is no live feed today but what can you do? It will be interesting to see what Jobs has for all of us. The banners seem to suggest something big and imporant. The rumours that he has invited all his mates round suggest something big as well.
