Rock music is good for you…
It boosts your brain power according to a new study reported in the Times.
Researchers at a Scottish university believe that the sound of guitar-based rock such as Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC and the Red Hot Chili Peppers improves concentration and boosts memory.
Not that this is new to me, of course, because I know it from first hand experience. I find that listening to rock, especially heavy rock, is just enough to flattened out the background noise allowing one to concentrate more. I cannot really write in silence at all anymore, which used to be a problem when I took exams. I bet I would have done far better on my SAT if I had some AC/DC or Iron Maiden playing in my ears. I will make sure my father reads the piece as well. He used to complain that he could not understand how I could be “studying” with that noise on in the background. It is a plain fact that once I started to be a heavy rocker in prep school my grades when up culminating one year in a straight A average.
To this day, and right now, I listen to heavy rock when I write. I tend to try to find music to suit what I am writing. So I listen to heavy, death and black metal when I am writing my Cthulhu tales and listen to more mellow stuff like Led Zeppelin, Whitesnake et al when I am writing something a bit deeper. When blogging I try to listen to music I am reviewing for my column. Right now I have the new UFO disc playing on the DVD player.
Oh and in case you want to know what drives down my brain power its REM, Coldplay and of the other whinge rock merchants polluting the radio these days. Dance music on the other hand just drives me to want to hurt the person blasting the crap.
