A new way to make money from yer blog

August 17th, 2006 | Category: Stuff, Technology

You know that in recent months I have been doing quite a bit to see if I can make a few schkels from this blog. And it is paying off. Well yet another company is trying to help people make the most out of their blog and its visitors. This time the person doing the program is a MIT-trained computational linguist. I installed it yesterday and it works fine. It is a free service that adds links to the various key phrases on the site (via a mouse-over). It comes up in a window with links to Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Shopping.com, Technorati, craigslist, and many other web sites. The Ontok Highlighter adds links to keyphrases in your website that are highly informative. (Check out their web site for a demo, or generate the code for your blog.)

It is early days yet but it is a pretty good bit of free code. You can choose the colour, background and size of the pop-up to maximise its use and minimise the amount of bother it causes. Anything that aims to maximise the earning potential of any blog is a good thing by my estimation. It also helps that, unlike other similar services, their site is pretty easy to use and navigate round.

Who Are You In The Cthulhu Mythos?

You are NYARLATHOTEP, the mind, spirit, physical representation of and messenger to, the Outer Gods. Often manifesting in human form, Nyarlathotep is a great manipulator of humans, bending them to the will of his masters. In true form Nyarlathotep is a 55’ tall monstrosity with a giant trunk-like proboscis. But he prefers the guise of a human, often appearing as a rich, well educated man, bending people to his will and towards their ultimate downfall.

Leave Cheney Out Of It

The Guardian:

Bill Clinton called for the world to prepare to tackle the cultural taboos surrounding circumcision yesterday if, as many expect, trials show that it protects men and the women they sleep with from Aids.

In a speech to the International Aids conference in Toronto, Canada, Mr Clinton said that if the trials had good results, there would be a major job of persuasion ahead. “Should this be shown to be effective, we will have another means to prevent the spread of the disease and to save lives, and we will have a big job to do,” he said. “It is important that as we leave here we all be prepared for a green light that could have a staggering impact on the male population but that will be frankly a lot of trouble to get done.”

Uh, yeah, good luck with that one.

When I ran across the story at Dust My Broom I was immediately reminded of a very funny scene in a novel by Joseph (Catch-22) Heller, God Knows, an “autobiography” of the biblical King David. I only dimly recalled the punchline (it’s been years since I read it), so I googled around and found this prcis of it:

Take the story of Michals dowry, for example. Saul sets Michals dowry at 100 Philistine foreskins. Heller spends pages (pages!) discussing Davids deliberations with Abner on how to go about this. First they figure on six men per Philistine; four to hold him, one to prop up the phallus, and one to perform the circumcism. Eventually they figure they can just kill each Philistine, and bring back the whole dick.

Coupons for Apple products

August 17th, 2006 | Category: Stuff

I am considering replacing my Mac desktop so I was happy to hear that Apple coupon codes can be found on CouponChief.com for Apple’s site. In fact there are quite a few coupons and discount codes for Apple. They vary on the type of product and the type of deal offered. I am not quite sure whether I want a laptop or a desktop yet.

Of course the site has coupons for other popular online shopping sites. It is well worth checking out before you head off to spend your money online.
