Lebanon lies down with evil

July 31st, 2006 | Category: Anti-Semitism/Jewery

Instead of dealing with Hizbollah and stopping them killing Israelis the Lebanese ignored their prescence and their attacks on Israel. Israel responded with force; now the Lebanese say because of these attacks they are now with Hizbollah. As far as it looks to anyone sane; they always where. The UN and Lebanon had 6 years to clean out the evil in their midst. They didn’t and so Israel is doing it for them.

BTW the BBC news department has completely given up being unbiased. Its all bashing Israel all the time.

MySpace & YouTube can make you…

July 31st, 2006 | Category: Growing Old Disgracefully, Music, Technology

JOHN JURGENSEN has written a great piece in WSJ called Moguls of the New Media. It is good to see a piece on the new online world of entertainment that is written without the normal mocking tone that comes from Late Review type of cultural critic. Futhermore there is not the slightest amount of seething at MySpace because its owned by the eeeevill Murdoch as you so often see when it is mentioned in the MSM.

Granted looking at the list of success stories I do have tinge of frustration that Laurence & I have not been offered a radio show on Sirius yet (Dodge & Simon Show), that Growing Old Disgracefully is not a household name yet and that I don’t have my own TV show…er sorry I digress.

Bands, artist, writers and potential directors are being discovered on MySpace, Garageband, YouTube and some of the other outlets. Long may they continue to do us. The more media coverage, even if it is slighly reluctant, is good for all of us that have sites on any or all of those outlets. The more eyes on the sites mean more potentials for us. Because, a roulette wheel though it may be, there is always a possibility we will get discovered.

Then again thanks to all those sites I have finally got a chance to write a paper for a London-based think-tank.

Get Car & Driver by subscription

July 31st, 2006 | Category: Politics

If I were sensible I would take up this offer from Mags Direct for the great car magazine Car and Driver. When I was young I used to read the magazine every month religiously. I rather miss reading it as often as I used to and getting a subscription might be a sensible way of doing things. Doings this via Mags Direct would be most definetely the most sensible option.

Sad anniversary nears

July 31st, 2006 | Category: Blog gos

A year ago I wrote the following:

Sad news from Iraq: journalist and blogger Stephen Vincent has been killed in Basra. Condolences to his family during this very sad time.

And a year does not change my view of the event. It was a great shame that he lost his life in Iraq after all he had done adding his voice to the coverage of the country emerging from several decades of murderous tyranny. As writer and bloggers we need to remember those of us that have died amongst our own. So spare a thought for Stephen and his family on the 2 of August. Raise a glass to the man. I certainly will do so.

Musos wanted to write a jingle

July 31st, 2006 | Category: Announcements, Blog gos, Music

PayPerPost are looking for a jingle for their service. It needs to be 30-60 second jingle that reflects the who ethos of the company. Music and vocals are wanted; not just background music. They are looking for some in mp3 that would be suitable for marketing for PPP. They will pay for it as well. Now I know quite a few of my readers are musos of one sort or another. Anyone want to have a go? I am going to have a crack at it that is for sure. For more info:

http://www.payperpost.com

Kim & I thought about it and produced this little ditty called ‘Blogging Blues’.

Not bombs but kiddie porn…

July 31st, 2006 | Category: ROPMA, Terrorism

One of the brothers involved in the Forest Gate raid has been found to be involved in child porn according to the News of the World.

Their week-long search of the house uncovered no explosives or chemical weaponsbut officers unearthed a haul of vile kiddie sex pictures on the family’s computer.

So all the stuff about him being a “religious” man who was good was a wee bit inaccurate?

Searching for property

July 31st, 2006 | Category: Stuff

There are several search engines for property in the London area and many of them are quite similar in scope. They attempt to help people find flats and house to both buy or let. One of their biggest problems is much of the time the property on the site is gone by the time you ring up the agent. There is a new one called Zoomf.com that is trying to do the UK Property Search Engine thing well. Its in beta form now with only Central London properties but the site shows great promise. It loads quickly and is laid out well. The maps comes up easily to demonstrate exactly where you are looking and is easy to use to locate positioning of the flat in relation to other aspects of the area. I looked up a few properties in Pimlico, an area I know well, and the maps were accurate. The variety of search variables makes it far easier to find exactly what you want while avoiding have to trawl through loads of properties of little or no interest. It is early days yet but this site looks very promising indeed. I look forward to using this service the next time I am looking to buy another property. It is very good that people looking for property in the UK have quite a bit of choice in sites to search. Competition is always helpful in moving things forward.

Rare Albino Snapping Turtle Found!

July 29th, 2006 | Category: Art

The Corner:

hillarybust

Displaying a sculpture to encourage discourse about the sexual power debate surrounding the possibility of a Hillary Clinton presidency is very much in line with our mission as a museum, noted Daniel Gluck, Executive Director. We are wholly dedicated to the exploration of the history, evolution and cultural significance of human sexuality. Historically, leaders are often expected to possess an exceptional amount of virility or fertility with displays of that sexual power often tied to their success. The artists portrayal of Hillary Clinton as a president who also happens to be a sexual being conveys the message that a woman need not squelch her sexuality in order to succeed as leader of the free world.

Actually, if I saw this . . . thing coming at me, sex would be about the last thing on my mind.

The sculptor, one Daniel Edwards, is also responsible for the Britney Spears sculpture (possibly NSFW) of a few months ago.

Some opine that it (Hillary, not Britney) looks more like Steve Buscemi. Others say Jimmy Carter. With all due respect, these people are idiots. The inspiration for “Hillary” was clearly . . .

Uniforms or not?

July 28th, 2006 | Category: Stuff

There is a continuing debate in the US & UK over whether or not uniforms are a good things for schoolchildren. In many cases its a debate between adults with children & without. Quite often its the children themselves that want a school uniforms for a variety of reasons. I went to prep school in Miami and we had a uniform; granted it was very Miami consisting of either an oxford shirt or a golf shirt with the school logo, sensible dark trousers and shoes (not trainers). I rather liked it as it was less to worry about when I got up at 8 in the morning. As I don’t “do” mornings so the less thinking I have to do after I get up the better. I have to admit to being firmly in the uniform camp (yes as a libertarian) whether it be for state or private school. (Whether or not there should be state provided education is another matter.)

blockoutAs you might gather from the name, this is a 3D version of Tetris. It’s actually a port of an old DOS game called Blockout, which I played a lot, more years ago than I care to remember.

It looks quite difficult, but it’s brilliantly designed and very intuitive. I actually found it easier to play than the original Tetris. There are some unobtrusive sound effects.

Or if you’d rather have a copy of Blockout itself, you can get it here. It’s a ZIP file, so you’ll need a program like WinZip or 7-Zip to unpack it. It runs fine on a modern machine in either a DOSbox or from Windows. The sounds don’t play though, at least in Windows XP.

If you’re looking for some other older games, the above Home of the Underdogs is the premiere “abandonware” site. It collects games from publishers no longer in business, or who’ve given their OK to distribute a particular game.

Buttons…still relevant?

July 27th, 2006 | Category: Music, Stuff

In thinking of the marketing for GoD’s new album I have considered all kinds of possible outlets including buttons. That got me thinking. Do hard rock fans wear buttons anymore? We all remember in the 80s those guys with hats and jeans jackets covered in the bloody things from every band imaginable. Those buttons now fetch a decent amount on eBay; especially rarities. I have quite a few from the various stuff I was sent by band pr companies. Most of em’ just were a logo or the name of the band but some got clever. Not many mind; most of the phrases thereon were lame; just as most political ones are now and then. This is probably due to the size of the space one gets to work with. I always liked the ones with something round the sides…especially if on a girl’s chest.

Anyway I was thinking we could do something like have Why be young & innocent around the edge with When you can grow old disgracefully in the middle. That said our logo would look cracking on a pin as well methinks.

Of course I could have a Button Maker and do em’ myself with a variety of logos and phrases whatever takes our fancy.

Of course the one good thing about buttons over stickers is that buttons never fall off.

To change or not…

July 27th, 2006 | Category: Stuff

As part of the whole moving-in together and getting a house procedure of getting married comes a bit of a poser. Its something that I have heard discussed by other friends who are moving up. Does one do up the house before one sells or not? Is the money spent going to add up to more for your property? Many estate agents tell you not to bother and most people these days will want to do stuff for themselves. Then adding a new light fixture or two and some white paint can make a pokey little flat look much larger.

It doesn’t matter that you might like low light in the flat; you need to make it look good to other people.

Pshaw! Pshaw! Pshaw!

July 27th, 2006 | Category: Literature

Today is the 150th anniversary of the birth (July 26, 1856) of George Bernard Shaw. By coincidence, I was going through some notes and I came across this rememberance of him by Bertrand Russell. I’d been unsuccessfully looking for it on the Internet for years. It seems to sum up the old fool nicely:

He wanted to be witty at all costs and it led him into unbelievable cruelties. He taunted [H.G.] Wells with facetious remarks about his wife—Wells’s wife—when he knew very well she was dying of cancer.

Alistair Cooke, Six Men, p. 166, Knoph, 1977

(The title of the post comes from an anecdote in Richard Ellmann’s Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Oscar Wilde. One day Wilde ran into GBS. Shaw said that he was thinking of starting a new magazine. Wilde asked him what it would be called, to which he replied, “Shaw! Shaw! Shaw!”

“Oh. And how will you spell it?”)

Its company policy then…ah that is alright. Needless to say a boycott of the bunch of Jew-hating cretins are in order. Email to express your disgust if you are up to it.

This blog isn’t only about gritty geopolitical analysis and incisive commentary on world events, you know. Sometimes a guy just likes to kick back and play with his pretty dollies.
elouai's doll maker 3

My pretty dolly would be even prettier if the stupid Javascript code worked and you could see the twinkling animated backgrounds. Click on the picture to go to the site and design your own pretty dolly, one that looks like a celebrity. You can change her hair, mouth, etc., which is a good thing, because the only celebrity I can think of with those manga-styled eyes is Marty Feldman. If you want to, you can design a pretty boy dolly, too.
