Blackberry nuttiness

Category: Technology

If there are any smart libertarian legal scholars and economists out there who can enlighten me on the Blackberry patent case, I’d love to hear from them. From my understanding, a wildly successful company that produces hand-held gadgets that allow gazillions of businessmen and women to communicate with their clients and colleagues could be turned off because of a patent dispute.

Has patent law gone totally mad in the United States? Patents, let’s not forget, are created by the State to deal with the issue of intellectual property rights, a thorny issue for libertarians, some of whom defend patents and some who say they are a statist heresy. But destroying one of the world’s most vibrant businesses seems not what such laws are about. Crazy.

Here is an article about how patents have caused a shakedown industry of its own.

As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher’s Council hold a vote every week on what they consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around… per the Watcher’s instructions, I am submitting one of my own posts for consideration in the upcoming nominations process.

Here is the most recent winning council post, here is the most recent winning non-council post, here is the list of results for the latest vote, and here is the initial posting of all the nominees that were voted on.
