Freddie vs Salma

For a bit of Friday evening fun, go and check out how two persons bearing the surname Hayek compare with one another. In terms of ideas, F.A. Hayek wins by a mile, but on other grounds, er….....

Milton says: legalise it!

June 03rd, 2005 | Category: Drugs, Politics

Milton Freedman (as well as 500 other economists) has come out in favour of cannabis legalisation. He says, quite rightly, that the money spent on persecuting pots smokers is a colossal waste of money. It also pleases me to see that he believes that all drugs should be legalised. He says:

“There is no logical basis for the prohibition of marijuana,” the economist says, ”$7.7 billion is a lot of money, but that is one of the lesser evils. Our failure to successfully enforce these laws is responsible for the deaths of thousands of people in Colombia. I haven’t even included the harm to young people. It’s absolutely disgraceful to think of picking up a 22-year-old for smoking pot. More disgraceful is the denial of marijuana for medical purposes.”

These are all things that I have written about quite a bit. It would be nice to see pot legalised, freeing up police to go after people who really threaten the nation like terrorists. I have always had a great deal of respect for the man, and none more so than right now.

G.o.D. moves slowly

June 03rd, 2005 | Category: Music

Just in case you were wondering what we are doing while we are not writing on here… John and I are heading off to Yorkshire this weekend to work on mixing the album. John has a great place to go spend time unmolested by modern nuisances (but with power, naturally). I will probably be taking reading material to amuse me between stints offering my opinion on what is being done. It does makes sense that John is taking me along; it will speed up the process a bit.

Incidentally, Dave has suggested that it might be good idea to have a listening party with the band and friends before we decide on the final mix of the CD. It will involve grape and grain, I suspect. After hearing the latest mix of ‘Whisky & Westminster’ (which is almost there), I am rather excited to hear what John’s magic touch can do to the rest of our material. Wait until you hear the Mitch Benn sung ‘Movin In’; never has sleaze been so much fun!

Friday Film Fest

June 03rd, 2005 | Category: Video

This is interesting and well done. I don’t have a clue what it’s about other than it seems to have some sort of religious theme. (There’s also kind of a weird, scraping soundtrack that you might want to turn down if at work.)

Ah, the dream of a personal rocket pack. Previous versions depended on hot, polluting propellent gases—this one uses abundant, eco-friendly compressed air. They might want to work on some kind of gyroscopic stabilization, though. (Warning: There are some pr0n and sex-related banners on the site. Nothing explicit, but you might want to be careful you don’t accidentally click on one of them.)

This one is definitely not safe for work. Why? Well, for one thing, there’s music.

For another, there’s Celine Dion. Celine Dion doing a Michael Jackson . . . tribute, I guess. Need I say more?
