You might prefer this to that rather odd BBC article. As a troop commander in the forward echelons of 30 Corps in 1945, of which Randall and Tonkin were a part, my father always told me that they could smell the camp from miles away. In fact Horrocks, who commanded 30 Corps, was admonished for going out into the surrounding countryside and rounding up every German man and woman for a radius of about 5 miles and forcing them to clean the camp up – not surprisingly many of them later succumbed to typhoid contracted at Belsen.
