Norwegian 100th Anniversary gig pre-party

As is the norm with Norwegian events, like Inferno, the pre-gig part was a wonderful affair with generous amounts of sushi and free beer. Musicians, journalists (who seemed to be almost interchangable there…quite a few were both), and celebs mingled in a light attmosphere with manga projected on the walls and an eclectic mixture of music played by the DJ. I showed up at 6 and was welcomed in by some very nice Norwegian PR types (pretty natch), and I spent the evening being offered a gig for my band, a writing gig for a new magazine, to be put on a few record company mailing lists, and having several interesting chats about music. I talked to members of MagneF (which features an ex-member of Aha), a brief chat with a member of Satyricon, and some other interesting conversations. Besides the fact that I am a musician (which seemed to impress, I kept getting asked by journos when I was performing, which is nice), the next thing which was of interest was the fact my parents live in Maine. Not surprisingly, even Norwegians I spoke to knew exactly where Maine was and what kind of place it was. We all left with a belly full of sushi and Japanese beer, clutching free t-shirts. Then things got a bit annoying for all.
After about 7:30 there were rumours of tumult amoungst the bands; it seemed some took exception to having to go on well after midnight and not having a soundcheck. This was all too obvious when we were still in the V.I.P. bar until an hour after it was suppose to end. They finally closed the bar and we all headed for the venue down the road. A first clue that things were going pear-shaped was that the guest-list line was rather long and not really moving. It got so bad we were split into two. After over 30 minutes in a queue in the cold, talking to some very interesting and lovely people I might add, I got to the front of the queue. I was informed by a terse clipboard fascist that I was NOT on the list. She said I could go “pay for my ticket” and I told her she “could get stuffed.” I mean, the fact I was holding the special t-shirts and had just walked out of the V.I.P. bit was obviously not enough for her. To add to the farce of the event, all the people in the queue that I had talked with over the past 4 hours+ asked me why I was leaving. I told them, and no one thought I was being unreasonable.
In the end it was a damn good night; lots of free booze, sushi, t-shirts, and a free CD of the bands performing. Lots of interesting and fruitful schmoozing with musos and Norwegian celebs. So all the fun of a big festival gig with none of the hassle. Kinda bummed I didn’t get to see some of the cool rock bands on the bill, including my buds in MagneF (hope that dodgy arm gets better soon), We, Turbonegro, Kind Midas, and of course Satyricon. I hope everyone, including Gnorhat, had a great time on the night.
