Home is where the heart is

November 09th, 2004 | Category: Politics

As I write, the television is on, and there is one of those many programmes on telling us all about the tricks of buying and selling a home, not to mention how to design it, make it more appealing, etc. There has been an enormous upsurge of this sort of programme in recent years. Such programmes are cheap to make, and I find a lot of this sort of stuff rather dull. On a more positive note, though, all these programmes ram home the message of how important ownership is to Brits, and indeed to everyone. The pride in making a bit of brick and mortar look better is so ingrained into British culture that it almost silly to point it out.

And that love of ownership ought to be ever present in the minds of any savvy politician. “An Englishman’s home is his castle” is not just a sentimental piece of patriotic doggerel, it goes to the heart of a liberal civil society. So maybe all those Guardianistas at the BBC making property programmes are unwittingly helping the cause of property rights after all.

Post-election break

November 09th, 2004 | Category: Growing Old Disgracefully

Tomorrow I am off to Devon again to relax and contemplate the idiocy of the left. While I am there I plan to pursue some of the contacts I made the last time and maybe do a spot of recording and performing. I go with no expectations, but will be taking lyrics, some music, and the demo.

I haven’t been posting that much is because I have been doing other things…I hassen to call them “real-life” distractions. I have been busy beta’ing both World of Warcraft and Shadowbane: Throne of Oblivion alternately. It is very interesting to go back and forth between the two MMOPRGs. I can assure you SB and WoW will be catering for entirely different audiences.

In addition, I have been helping Jon P & Mater decide and plan what they plan to write for the sequel to Statism Sucks! 2.0. I am sure both Jon P, Wolfie, and the rest of the crew will keep you informed while I am off in blustery Devon.

I am about to write another Cthulhu story called Fishies that will appear over at the Temple while I am away. Any of you who know about the entire “Plushie” scene will have an idea where this one is going. In related Cthulhu news, its good to see that Shoggoth.net has returned from its slumber.

No need to cancel this bloke

Too late to cancel
Mitch Benn & the Distractions
(Laughing Stock)

Too Late to Cancel is the latest collection of tomfoolery from Mitch Benn. This time his amply able band, the Distractions, is along for the ride. This time out he targets his wit at such things as West End/Broadway style large musicals, the Smiths, Jim Morrison, tour riders, and heavy metal stage sets amongst other things. One of the funniest songs on this collection is ‘Lonesome Fuhrer’, where we get to hear Adolf sing a lament to his long-forgotten wish to be a cowboy. On ‘Hard to Shock’, Mitch meanders into social commentary with a rhetorical piece about the state of the nation’s apathy to scandal. As with Radio Face, this a very funny collection, indeed, and, unlike ‘Radio Face’, this album has the potential for worldwide appeal. Mitch and Co are that perfect antidote to 30 something+ angst. This lot are ready for Dr Demento, because they are definetely demented. ‘Too Late to Cancel’ is a musical comedy tour de force.

MM Hates America DVD

November 09th, 2004 | Category: Politics

You can pre-order yours, now. Should you be buying a copy for a person of a delicate disposition, there is a family friendly version as well.

Dean has written a very interesting piece in counter to the MM loving/Bush hating crowd. He writes as someone who not only voted for the President, but is proud of doing so. And, as any reader of Dean’s blog knows, he is not a straight-ticket voting Republican either.

When Pigs Fly

November 09th, 2004 | Category: Stuff

From an email to Dave Barry’s blog:

This in itself has most flight attendants saying…. what? so now anyone can have their pet in their lap for emotional support through out the flight??? better yet… WHAT contstitutes an “Emotional Support Animal”... and what authorization does someone need to carry this “ESA” with them on flights. Remember we are not talking about Dogs for the Blind or Monkeys for the Paralized. Spefically noted in the Update Pigs and Small Horses are to be allowed on board planes…. YES SMALL HORSES?

I googled Emotional Support Animals + Airlines and sho’ ‘nuff (no direct link—it’s in a PDF file about in the middle of the page), from the F.A.A.’s own lips:

Other unusual animals such as miniature
horses, pigs and monkeys should be
evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Factors to
consider are the animals size, weight, state
and foreign country restrictions, and whether
or not the animal would pose a direct threat
to the health or safety of others, or cause a
fundamental alteration (significant
disruption) in the cabin service. If none of
these factors apply, the animal may
accompany the passenger in the cabin.

I wonder if my pet cobra would qualify? He usually only bites people who make sudden moves or noises.
