Pigeons coming home to roost ?
This item in the Grauniad makes me think that maybe, just maybe, people are starting to sit up and take notice of the way things are running. It must be said that it may not be the end, it may not even be the beginning of the end, but it may just be the end of the beginning – to quote one W S Churchill.
It would seem from the comments to my last posting that some, at least, have misunderstood the thrust of my argument. This was not about any one party; it was about the general loss of democracy across the board. No party will ever fully represent the ideals and desires of the electorate; the trick has always been to identify which one offers something closest to the voters’ own vision of good governance. It is that which has now been lost. The myth of “Parliamentary Democracy” is just that, a myth. It is no more democratic than was, say, the Politburo in the USSR. On the surface it appears to be an elected group who represent their constituents, but in fact it is a permanent group of career parliamentarians and their equally permanent cronies in the civil service who determine the what, how, when, and by whom of all matters of governance.
But wait…..there’s more !!
Yes, loads of Labour MP’s argued against Blair on Iraq, some even voted against it, but at the end of the day, the Whips ensured that there was a majority in the “Ayes” lobby when it counted. That is not democracy anymore than the closure of Special Needs Schools by County Council “Cabinets” is democratic – especially when it flies in the face of direct opposition from the electorate. It is yet another example of ideology driving a particular concept which is everywhere shown to be a complete disaster – but the politicians and public servants refuse to listen. That is not democracy! Other examples abound. Looking back, we have the example of “Degsie” Hatton and his “Militant” Labour Council in Merseyside. How democratic was it to have them blacklisting householders who dared to question their policies and their wasteful activities? How democratic was it (and for all we know, is it still) to have heavies more suited to the Mafia going round and enforcing obedience to the decrees of “Militant Labour”?
How quickly we forget. How well Mr Hatton and his colleagues have done in business since their expulsion as Councillors and Labour Party members. But, let’s face it, Labour are not alone in this destruction of democracy; all the parties use the Whip, all parties are guilty of never actually changing the direction of this trend. Why should they be? They and their “in crowd” are in the driving seat, and, whatever happens, they have an assured hand in handing out the kudos, the cash, and the perks. That is what power has always been about.
No, a few MP’s standing up and denouncing the leadership in the Chamber is not evidence of democracy at work. Lots of MP’s changing Parties, or indeed resigning the Whip, or, better yet, resigning their seats and forcing elections – now that would be evidence of democracy. Making the permanent Civil Service answerable for its actions, and exposing the incompetence at their heart – that would do something for democracy as well.
I guess we will have to live in hope of hearing of blizzards and an Ice Age in Hell.

I thought everyone knew that. The government exists to perpetuate itself through total control of the people, and models itself on the undemocratic E.U. Here, 1200 MPs and members of the Lords, with their civil servants, larded with political apointees, and no longer pretending any independence, have used devolution to extend their power even in Wales and Scotland where state clients, as voters, were always the norm. Now using divide and rule, they have introduced regions and postal voting to Gerrymander a grip on England. With ever expanding local politics, recruiting ever more politicians, civil servants, and locally employed workers (Unionists all), there remain few voters who are not state clients. In reality it no longer matters much which of the venal parties is in power there are enough well paid posts and state sinecures to go around among family and friends. Thus a massive National Network of left-Liberal public purse feeders, (The Matrix) exists to secure it’s power over the people.
But there can be no doubt that a massive economic shock will bring all this to a satisfactory end in due course. Reality will intrude. Voters will learn that they get precisely what they vote for, and The Matrix will learn, for the umpteenth time that economic rules cannot be ignored for ever. The people will pay, they alwaws do, it is the forfeit for not watching the state, and allowing them to gull you. As they say, the State is not your friend. More correctly the state is a massive exo-parasite and will always try to control you.
