Onward to defeat
Unless pictures of Mr Blair beating Iraqi prisoners turn up, the Tories will loose the next election, perhaps deservedly so.
No subject has united the British people against the Liberal elite like immigration, with 70% – 90% consistently favouring tight controls and an end to generous benefits. No subject has the Conservative party so resolutely avoided.
Following Austria (Asylum Seekers processed within 72 hours), or France/Italy (limited access to state benefits), would earn Mr Howard the BBCs wrath and the voters votes, almost certainly winning the next election.
However, the Party that defeated Hitler, the Soviet Union, Argentinean Fascism, Union militancy, and British Socialism has been reduced to cowardice, fear, and cringing hesitation.
That Mr Howard dances around this issue like Fred Astaire circumnavigating Ginger Rogers, shows that once-great Tory party in a state of frenzied inertia and perpetual defeat.
Mr Bush, in expressing simple, clear moral goals, has earned his electorates respect and another 4 years’ rule. Australias Mr Howard, (promising fair but lawful immigration), is sailing towards a third term. Britains Mr Howard (in taking no stand, other than his resolve to take no stand), will join the ranks of failed Tory hopefuls now available as after dinner speakers and political talk show guests.

“A group of former officers who commanded John F. Kerry in Vietnam more than three decades ago declared yesterday that they oppose his candidacy for president, challenged him to release more of his military and medical records, and said Kerry should be denied the White House because of his 1971 allegations that some superiors had committed ‘war crimes.’ Kerry has since said his accusation about war crimes and atrocities was too harsh, but many of his former commanders contended yesterday that they believed the allegations were aimed at them. ‘I do not believe John Kerry is fit to be commander in chief,’ said retired Rear Admiral Roy Hoffmann, who helped organize the news conference and oversaw all of the swift boats in Vietnam at the time Kerry commanded one of those crafts. ‘This is not a political issue; it is a matter of his judgment, truthfulness, reliability, loyalty, and trust — all absolute tenets of command.’” (05/05/04)

Alan Miliburn has just launched a policy to get charities more involved in public services. Right now on the Daily Politics he is using words like ‘empowering’ (yuck) and ‘personal responsability’. He claims he doesn’t care where services come from in the end. As Andrew Neil said, this is “compassionate Conservatism” straight from the bowels of Texas.
Alan’s colleagues on the neanderthal left are going to go apopletic. It will be fun to watch the bun fight.
