Re: Getting chippy

Sir – The solution to forgotten identity cards is simple. At the age of 18, every adult will be compulsorily microchipped, and every state official, from traffic wardens upwards, will be issued with chip readers.

I dearly hope this bloke is taking the piss. If he is not, the man is an authoritarian of the frightening variety. I have heard people speaking of chipping in all seriousness. Anyone who supports this type of measure is to me either terribly naive, incredibly stupid (as in it would not actually stop terrorists), or just plain evil.

The deselection of Tory MP Nick Hawkins by his local constituency association on Thursday is causing waves among colleagues. After all, not only did Hawkins have an ultra-safe seat; he was also a frontbencher. “God help us if the rest of our associations start to get ideas,” says another Conservative member.
“It has to be said, though, that Nick did make some funny decisions.”
Indeed. One was securing as his PR adviser one Mike Penning – the ex-fireman who masterminded the press strategy of, er, Iain Duncan Smith.
