Why can’t the British government manage something like this?

I agree with Mike on this one. Those of you that live in the US and like Chris Muir’s material should bug the syndication people to pick up Chris.

A Black triumph

School of Rock
Paramount Pictures

Considering what a few of my blog colleagues (and a few others) are up to these days, seeing School of Rock would seem inevitable. Alas, I have to say, despite the good reviews, I had my doubts about this latest Jack Black vehicle. I can say hand on heart: I was totally wrong. I have not seen as funny a comedy in a very long time. School of Rock ranks up there with Spinal Tap and Still Crazy for its portrayal of rock music. It was gut-laugh funny and oh so on the mark. Despite the rather odd setting, the movie was believable right from the start. There were no twee Hollywood type short-cuts, and the end was not ruined by a smaltzy ending. The band might be a tad clich, but in my experience this type of clich exists for a reason…even in my band. Another thing the movie got perfect was the non-musical/non-rocker girlfriend. At least one of us in the audience had experienced one particular scene firsthand. This movie is well cast (The lead guitarist is a dead ringer for Steve Vai), staged (Watch the movie carefully, as there are some very funny sight gags), and written (There a several very funny and obscure rock music gags). As the English are wont to say, “it does what it says on the tin.”

EU free speech

More encouraging news from the EU front. I especially enjoy this quote.

We must grub out anti-institutionalism and euro-scepticism.

Yet another example of attacking the critic rather than their criticisms.

The Meddling

The Sage hadn’t slept well the night before. His dreams were invaded by the nocturnal wanderings of his old friend Saul. Even now, at noon, the Sage was still trying to figure out whether his visitor was really Saul or just a representation of him that gave him the warning. Saul had never spoken directly of astral projection but, considering his studies, it certainly was likely that he had attained that state.

More on out of control jocks

February 19th, 2004 | Category: Political Correctness

Just as a half dozen [Univ. of Tennessee] football players, Lakers basketball player Kobe Bryant, and pop idol Michael Jackson have discovered — sexual assault charges without evidence are almost impossible to prosecute or prove. ‘In cases where its one persons word against the other and theres no corroborating physical evidence, those are very difficult cases,’ said John Gill, an assistant district attorney for Knox County. Gill declined to comment specifically on the recent allegations or investigation of a UT professor accused of the alleged aggravated rape of a 20-year-old laborer, but he did comment on the infrequency of male rape in Knoxville.” (02/17/04)

And then, of course, there are lovely goings-on at the University of Colorado and their problems with rape, drunkeness, & whoring. Barnett seems to be the living embodiment of the jock mentality.

But Is He Sincere?

LOS ANGELES (Reuters)- Late-night comedian Conan O’Brien sought to defuse a flap over a recent segment poking fun at the French-Canadian province of Quebec by issuing a self-deprecating “apology” on Tuesday in French.

“People of Quebec, I’m sorry,” the host of NBC’s “Late Night” show said in English, as a translator recited in French, with English subtitles, “People of Quebec, I’m an albino jackass.”

“We meant no harm with our comedy piece the other night,” O’Brien continued, “translated” into French as: “The other night, I wet the bed like a little girl.”

“I was a stranger in a strange land and I was very insensitive,” he went on, with the subtitle: “I have a small penis.”

He says that like it’s a bad thing.
