Back my opponent, please…says Dean to Gore

February 12th, 2004 | Category: Politics

Former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, facing elimination from the Democratic presidential race, has begged former Vice President Al Gore to endorse Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass) in the hopes of slowing or even reversing the frontrunning Senator’s momentum.’ Howard has come to the conclusion that the only thing that could derail John Kerry at this point is an endorsement from Al Gore,’ one Dean aide said today. ‘If Al really wants us to win this thing, he’ll endorse Kerry as soon as possible.’” (02/09/04)

Maybe Dean could get Madonna and Moore to back Kerry, too. It’s funny to see that the backing of Gore is now considered a millstone. It seems Democrats see the guy as as big of a doofus as the rest of us.

Free speech creeps back in William & Mary

A student group, the Sons of Liberty, saw its satirical protest unlawfully halted by W&M in November; it was one of many such protests nationwide that were shut down on campuses this past fall. While W&M allowed the group’s bake sale to proceed without incident this time, W&M President Timothy J. Sullivan issued a statement denying that his administration acted improperly in stopping then same protest just months before.” (02/11/04)

An actual debate on the merits of racial preferences has taken place on an American campus, Utah State University. ... Astonishingly, the university administration did not step in to halt the proceedings on the grounds that feelings might be hurt. The debate was civil, with some booing and cheering on both sides. ... Is it possible that other universities will begin experimenting with free speech? The fog of censorship on campus is beginning to lift, thanks to the pressure of litigation … by groups such as the Center for Individual Rights, the Alliance Defense Fund and the Philadelphia-based Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, a major player in the campus wars.” (02/11/04)

Hitler or Homer (Simpson)?

I love the smell of blogging in the morning.

I’m less enamored with it at the end of a brutal day.

But just so that your visit wasn’t entirely in vain, here’s a neat site that Jonah Goldberg noted in The Corner.

You mentally pick either a dictator or a sitcom character and the computer asks you yes-or-no questions until it guesses who you’ve got in mind.

Go on, you know you want to try it.
