First of all, Stephen Pollard has written a biting piece on left-wing hypocrisy. More specifically, he challenges the trend in certain types to bleat on about state schools but then send their chilldren to private schools (inc. Tony Blair).

Next we have Melanie, who lets us know about a member of the European Parliament hammering the EU’s policy on Israel. German Green MEP has written a pretty devasting critique on the reasoning behind the EU love of all things Palestinian.

Meanwhile in Maine the “digital divide” debate still rages, despite the governor’s bloated plan to give every student a computer. Scott K Fish has discovered an interesting solution to the problem of obsolescence, a plan initiated by a Colby graduate.

Elsewhere, the latest BestofMe is up, minus, due to email problems, our entry. It is my understanding that email has been rather flaky of late thanks to the MyDoom virus. The post should appear in next week’s version.

And finally, Colby shares his thoughts on nannyists who wish to ban spanking.

Tunes with your rounds sir?

February 09th, 2004 | Category: Nutty stuff

A British-based company is selling MP3 players which can be attached to an assault rifle. The ‘AK-MP3’ player is built into the ammunition clip of a Kalashnikov. It can be swapped with the real magazine carrying bullets and inserted into the weapon. ... It comes with enough storage space to hold 9,000 songs. Former Russian rock star Andrey Koltakov, a partner in the dotcom company offering the AK-MP3 for sale, said: ‘This is our bit for world peace — hopefully, from now on many militants and terrorists will use their AK-47s to listen to music and audio books.’” (02/08/04)

This is a neat accessory for the worldly mercenary. Now someone needs to come up with a handy cigar holder to stick in the butt of the gun and I would be sorted (complete with cutter and lighter of course).

No doubt one of the most popular tracks on the AK-MP3 will be ‘Rock’ the Casbah’ by the Clash. Of course, I would prefer something along the lines of ‘Highway to Hell’ by AC/DC, ‘Wake up Dead’ by Megadeth or ‘Run to the Hills’ by Iron Maiden. What would be yours?

Medical Cannabis in Illinois

February 09th, 2004 | Category: Drugs

Companion medical marijuana bills have been introduced in the Illinois Senate and House by a bipartisan coalition of legislators. Like the successful and popular laws in Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, SB 2440 and HB 04868 would permit seriously ill patients to use and possess medical marijuana with their doctors’ recommendation, without fear of arrest or jail. The bills have bipartisan support. The Senate version is sponsored by Sen. Carol Ronen (D-Chicago), and the House bill is sponsored by Rep. Angelo Saviano (R-River Grove) and cosponsored by Reps. Larry McKeon (D-Chicago) and Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago).” (02/05/04)

This bit of sanity comes via Rational Review. It would be nice, of course, if they just legalised cannabis and were done with it. It is good to see them trying to get those who really need the drug in a legal position to be able to have the stuff.

Songwriting redux absurdum

February 09th, 2004 | Category: Growing Old Disgracefully

As you may have read early last week, songwriting for my band’s album is going rather well. I am happy to report that this weekend was as productive as last weekend. We have 10 complete songs now and parts of another three or four. Even Johnathan Pearce has put his hand to song-writing. After a few drinks he threw himself into the task and produced a good rocker with a double-entendre twist.

Due to a less than perfect mobile phone web-site, it has taken almost a week to get me the pictures from last week’s fun. (We finally gave up and dl’ed the pictures to a PC.) The picture posted is fairly good proof that all those mobile phone cameras that are being so touted are rather rubbish.

Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Those N-G-O’s have got to go !!

February 09th, 2004 | Category: Bloody insane stuff

Mark Cowdrey, 39, of Southsea, said: “It was built about 40 years ago, but it should have been pulled down 50 years ago. The fella that built it got an award, but he should have been hanged.”
That statement was made 2 1/2 years ago, along with a lot of other very uncomplimentary comments. .

So what has happened to change the plans for demolition of the eyesore? One of those verdampte NGO’s has stuck its nose in the gears. New housing and retail outlets were to have been built, but that has all been put on hold whilst an application is made to preserve the monstrosity! Nobody is pleased about that except a few of the effete elite crowd, who don’t give a hoot about Portsmouth getting on with life. Those “beautiful people” should be made to pay for the economic damage that will ensue from putting such a roadblock in the way of some useful construction.
