War on Medical Cannabis just starting

Category: Drugs

Let’s not make the mistake of thinking the War on Medical Marijuana patients is OVER. Far from it. This is actually the most critical moment in the ‘war;’ some battles have been won, and we need to help build on that success and raise awareness even further. Only nine states have passed medical marijuana laws and, as noted, even in the states which have, although the tide is turning, the feds are still arresting people for the horrible crime of … taking medicine.” (01/30/04)

This whole debate seems silly to me. Why treat cannabis (or the active drug in cannibis) any different than any other drug? If the medical establishment deems it a worthwhile drug to use, for whatever reason, it should be legalized as a controlled substance, just as morphine is. And controlled, just as morphine is. Both sides seem to be arguing past their real intentions. The legalization groups really want to decriminalize the social use of marijuana and the anti-legalization group are worried about just that. Why not legalize it as a controlled substance, retaining the illegality of growing your own? That would satisfy at least the stated issues of both sides, though I’m sure cut off the real agenda of the legalization side at the knees.

What does the AMA say about legalization?

Actually I think it should be just the opposite. Where one is allowed to grow one’s own. If people were allowed to do so it would mean they did not have to go to drug dealers or even chemists. The quality could be controlled and the price kept down. Alas, government distrbuted stuff tends to rather rubbish ala the Canadian medical cannabis problem.
