Schools being forced to do their job

December 08th, 2003 | Category: Political Correctness

Three federal judges in Michigan now have ruled that school districts violated the free speech rights of students. On Friday, U.S. District Judge Gerald E. Rosen said the Ann Arbor School District acted improperly in the case of a Roman Catholic student who wanted to express her views on homosexuality. The case is ‘about tolerance of different, perhaps, ‘politically incorrect’ viewpoints in the public schools,’ Rosen wrote.” (12/08/03)

Two hours before she would be stabbed to death during sixth period, a lawsuit contends, Ortralla Mosley complained to teachers at Reagan High School that her ex-boyfriend was becoming increasingly violent with her and that she was worried about her safety. That suit, filed in Austin last week, says school officials knew of Marcus McTear’s violence with girls but were ‘deliberately indifferent.’ Now Ortralla’s mother, Carolyn, is suing the Austin Independent School District for wrongful death under Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sexual discrimination in public schools. She seeks $23 million in damages.” (12/08/03)

God is a libertarian?

December 08th, 2003 | Category: Politics

Well, at least Andy Duncan seems to think so. While Duncan has written a rather long piece on the subject, I happen to agree with every word of it. It is a consumate piece of writing that raises some interesting points. Of course, seeing as I am the author of Statism Sucks! Ver. 2.0, it’s hardly surprising, now, is it?!

Andy makes a case against a Christian being able to be a libertarian as well. This is a point which I have attempted to present with many a Christian. It usually begins with my assertion that tax is theft. Then the Christian proceeds to tell how it is moral for the state to tax to provide x & y for those less fortunate. I then explain how it is a protection racket which involves government instead of organised crime. Several Christian libertarians make an interesting case for there being such a thing in the comments section of the post. Much of the argument revolves around the interpretation of several of the commandments.

Andy has conveniently rewritten a few of the commandments to make them work better for libertarians and socialists. All in all, this piece is the type of thought-provoking essay that Samizdata is known for, and long may it continue.

BestofMe Symphony debuts

Not a bad selection of posts for its first edition. I look forward to many more to come. Bloggers do have favourite posts, even if those are not always recognized in any fashion; they are usually the ones they wrote from the heart or the gut.

Kris on Reagan

December 08th, 2003 | Category: Politics

Not that keen, actually, to be honest. As you can expect, she has opened up a mighty can of worms. To make matters, worse she is more keen on FDR than ole’ Ronnie. How one can like a socialist over the hammer on the socialists, I don’t know.

Ghost has an amazing picture of a Roman 20-sided die. Wonder if Gygax will bid for this artifact.

Amiel on Cannibals

December 08th, 2003 | Category: Bloody insane stuff

Barbara Amiel has turned her attention away from ROPMA and towards the German cannibal, Armin Meiwes. She also addresses some of the other more “unusual” sexual predilictions in her most amusing piece.

But, if the situation in the Armin Meiwes case makes him guilty of a lesser crime than murder according to German law, that is the crime of which he should be found guilty.

It’s amusing to me how some people are so upset by this case. I recieved a few angry comments for my flippant remarks on the matter. This was the most critical.

You are a vile and disgusting idiot. You should be murdered and eaten by a sexual predator who takes of advantage of your insanity and dull wit.

The commenter seems to miss the fact that this whole event was voluntary; why would I volunteer to be eaten…by a bloke? I just find it terribly funny that the eatee not only volunteered, but is on videotape saying so. It is ultimately between consenting adults. Very strange consenting adults, but consenting adults, just the same.

Alas, Jackie has not responded to any queries about what to serve with roast human.

Update: The Grey Monk has expressed his thoughts on this matter as well.
