Carnival of Censors

November 13th, 2003 | Category: Blog gos

The new Carnival of the Vanities is up, but not without some controversy. It seems the current host has not really got into the spirit of the entire endeavor.

He has left out things that he finds offensive:

That was a personal call based on the nature of your post. I do apologize if you feel slighted, but it was just my preference not to add that one particular post.

-Max

He has made uncalled for remarks about others, like for instance our entry.

Complete with pictures we didn’t need to see, Andrew Ian Dodge weighs in on defining metrosexuality.

Um, was that entirely necessary, Max? It was one picture; I was not nude or anything. Do you have something against long hair or champagne? Or is it personal against me?

In short, Max, the host of the current CoV, is a bit of an arse. You should realise this before heading over there this week. If you feel that he has erred in his behaviour, he has a comments section for your thoughts.

Let’s hope that the host next week, Peaktalk, is a bit more into the spirit of things.

Update: Jackie has pointed out that Max links to Wizbang, which currently hosts links to the Paris Hilton porn video.

Update: Max attempts to defend his behaviour, or, rather, justify it. In short: it’s his blog, and if you don’t like being omitted, tough tamales.

Disenfranchisement in Ulster

November 13th, 2003 | Category: Northern Ireland

‘Vote early and often,’ was the infamous mock from certain electors in Northern Ireland in the past – Sinn Fein/IRA is particularly notorious for obtaining votes of dead people and those who never vote.

But disenfranchising 36,000 people because they don’t have photographic ID is undemocratic. It’s not that rigorous in England, Scotland and Wales, surely? Taking the vote off many of the most vulnerable groups (e.g. many pensioners and people from disadvantaged areas may not have passports or driving licenses) is a disgrace. What’s clearer is that it won’t stop the intimidation by Sinn Fein/IRA who, when they are canvassing people who don’t plan to vote (e.g. in parts of Londonderry’s Bogside), say: “Get out and f*in’ vote or ye’ll be f*in’ got!”

The problem again is the cancer of paramilitarism – deal with them, and do not undermine democracy. These Sinn Fein/IRA MLAs the very people who’ll be lining up to get their three ministries after November 26.

Travesty of Justice

The Metham rapists are being tried as juveniles. This is an absolute disgrace! Obviously the judge in question is a jock.

Verdict: Howard bitch-slapped Blair

November 13th, 2003 | Category: UK Politics

By almost universal consent, Michael Howard did very well at his first PMQs yesterday. Now that is over, and it looks as if PMQs has returned to its gladitorial glory, it’s time for the Conservatives to get their policies in order.

Arsehole music collective back anti-Bush ads

November 13th, 2003 | Category: Politics

Moby, Michael Stipe and Jack Black are among the artists backing an
anti-Bush campaign that aims to highlight the American President’s “lies and
failures”. The campaign is based around a competition that is encouraging people to make a 30 second anti-Bush ad. The best will be aired on TV in early 2004 in the week prior to Dubya’s State of the Union address.

Moby explains: “it is crucial that voters understand what President Bush’s policies really mean for our country. And to do that, we need creative new ads that clearly show what’s at stake. The ‘Bush-in-30-Seconds’ ad contest has been developed and run by a small team of people. We’ve come together because we believe that by tapping into the vast talent pool of creative people beyond the Beltway, we’ll find the right messages and ads to expose the failure of President Bush’s policies”. More info

Ok, what bad policies? The economy is doing well, the US has not been attacked by Islamokazis since 9/11 and Bush is popular. Surely these nitwits realise that because the economy is doing well their fans have money to spend on their albums? Probably not, their hatred for Bush is so intense, they lack any means of rational thought.

Ashholes ruin biz in NYC?

November 13th, 2003 | Category: Drugs

Consider for a moment if this were your livelihood. You run a video
store in downtown Brooklyn and you’re barely breaking even. You mind you own business, try to stay up to code, and serve your local customers. It’s a fairly bland job but it pays the bills and provides a good service to the community. To keep in compliance with ‘No Smoking’ laws, you have an ashtray on hand so that smoking customers can put their cigarettes out when they enter the store. But because government force is purposely vague, you are nailed with a $4,000 fine for not having ‘No Smoking’ signs and a company ‘No Smoking’ policy clearly posted for all to see.” (11/12/03)

ROPMA tactics

November 13th, 2003 | Category: ROPMA

Muslim militants planning attacks in Saudi Arabia’s holiest city, Mecca, booby-trapped copies of Islam’s holy book, the Koran, to kill and maim pilgrims, a leading Saudi-owned newspaper has reported. ...this novel weapon was discovered in the arms caches police found after raiding militant hideouts in Mecca and the capital Riyadh ….Asharq al-Awsat said the militants had also stuffed explosives into water bottles, which pilgrims normally carry into the shrines, and that they were planning to dress up in wigs and women’s clothes …. Women in Saudi Arabia, and in the holy shrines in particular, are required to wear loose, black cloaks that cover them from head to toe. Some women also cover their faces.” (11/12/03)
