A Fond Farewell to Mikey
Michael Portillo has announced he is to stand down from Parliament at the next General Election, according to the BBC. It will be a sad loss to the House of Commons and to the Tory Party. Farewell to a great Conservative MP.

I personally am both upset and angry – speaking as somebody who was more supportive of Portillo and his stances than most of the Tory blogosphere.
We’ve got a new leader who wants to build a powerful frontbench of all the talents and he’s offered a key shadow cabinet post where he could have been a constructive and important influence and what does he do – he walks away from it all. After all that.
I am so pissed off and, at the risk of sounding melodramatic, I feel slightly betrayed.
Yeah well all of us who know Portillo feel that way. Its not him, its the people around him that are/were problem.
Well obviously I’m not nearly as close to it all as you lot are, but tended to figure that was the problem.
I mean, quite often you see the guy saying “Look, I am NOT ordering these briefings, if they are happening I didn’t order them” and it’s perfectly believable – ok, I believed him anyway most of the time – but then you have to think; yeah, but even with the best will in the world, if you can’t even keep your own men on a leash when it counts are you really the man to pull the party together and hold it on course…
It’s really sad, frankly.
