A racist-free police? You never know…
David Blunkett has announced that membership of the BNP should preclude individuals from becoming a police officer. ‘But what about Free Speech and freedom of political affiliation?!’ some may cry. Of course, a democratic society must afford its citizens such freedoms, and political leanings should never normally be a criteria for employment, but… In the case of the BNP, membership of a racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic group such as this is not simply a choice of one political approach over another, it is subscription to offensive and abhorrent ‘values’, ones unwelcome in any organisation, especially not the Police, which is struggling to deal with this problem.
(There is one exception though. Surely membership of the Labour Party should be enough to disqualify someone from their job. Especially if it’s in politics…)
