Metrosexual = sissy?

Category: Nutty stuff

A metrosexual is a straight man that acts like a gay man. It basically means that a guy is into sissy crap like facials, tanning and hair care products.

This comes from the comments section of Eye on the Left.

My response:

Um…er I took this quiz and I am metrosexual. I am not a bloody sissy mate, say that again and I will have one of my female friends kick your arse.

Metrosexuals are men who know how to dress, take care in their appearance and don’t like sports. Its a silly expression, but when idiots think any bloke who doesn’t like sports, can dance and dress themselves is a fag: you need it.

The implication of much of the writing I see criticising the term is that it’s not “normal’ for me to behave this way; i.e., anyone who’s acting this way is either a repressed homosexual or putting it on to seem more “caring & sharing”. Granted, there are probably men who are in these catagories, but that does not mean all metrosexuals are posing. Another critic claimed “A metrosexual is basically a narcissist”. Why? This particular statement befuddles me. Perhaps all who misuse the term to condemn others should look to themselves and ask “Why am I such a lout?”.

Update:

Update: Dean has waded into the debate and declared me in denial. Quite about what I am in denial about I am not sure. In addition, Michele reports that Kin Du Toit is raising blogger hackles over what it means “to be a man.” Kim makes some valid points, but he hides them in a thick vaneer of machismo, swearing and downright idiocy. I mean, he praises The Man Show, one of the lamest things on TV. He lays into Queer Eye for a Straight Guy as well, obviously totally missing that its suppose to be funny!

Update II: Alex takes on this prickly issue on his blog. As always, its a good read. Stryker has written a response to Kim’s bleat as well. James has a neat round-up of those who have been unimpressed with Kim’s post.

    But you ARE a fag.

Obviously, I agree with you entirely. That all comes out of the age old reverse prejudice which holds that if someone goes about looking well and “put together” he, or she for that matter, puts too much emphasis on appearance. Well, those same supercilious types who go about looking rotten are always complaining of not being treated well in retail and service establishments. And they cannot figure out why!

The thing that makes me really laugh about the whole metrosexual thing is that somehow, straight guys think that being gay or not being gay has anything to do with them. Party on, mates!

What I don’t get about this buzzword is what was wrong with “being a gentleman”?

A gentleman is supposed to haver certain dress and grooming standards (and certain behaviour standards as well), so what does a metrosexual do that isn’t already covered?

As I understand it, the term “metrosexual” is merely an updated term for an old concept. A couple hundred years ago, the term was “fop,” and it meant exactly the same thing.

    Real men fear pussification!
I juset read Kim du Toit’s post on manhood, and I have to admit to being a tad annoyed. While du Toit makes some good points, the overall tone strikes me as one of bullying and attempted argument by intimidation,...

I definitely prefer fop in that case…

To use a hockey phrase, a real man will take the hit to make the play.

Teamwork, skill and self-sacrifice are at least part of what makes up a real man. How many of us live that way?

“He lays into Queer Eye for a Straight Guy as well, obviously totally missing that its suppose to be funny!”

well, Adam Sandler movies are supposed to be funny, too.. but they’re not.. the point is that these shows are warping the ‘accepted standard’ and bringing entertainment down to the lowest common denominator

Brett, when I first heard about “Queer Eye,” I was concerned, too, about it being exploitive of one “side” or the other, of lowing acceptable levels of decorum on the tube (like that’s possible), and a host of other things.

Then I saw it. I saw how they treated the straight guy. I saw how they treated his mom, who had nominated him for the make-over. And I saw how they watched and commented on their project in the post make-over viewing. And, Andrew, it’s not all done for laughs. I was impressed.

Yeah, so it’s wonderful PR for an “Eeeeeeeevil Lifestyle.” So what? Screw the lifestyle condemnations. Appreciate the individuals.

Methinks the term “metrosexual” has gained the status that “bright” only dreams of. perhaps that’s why Bright Dean declares you in denial.
