Most of the time I love Germany, but other times . . . . like today and this article have put me on the down side of living here.
Crowds of angry residents in Berlin Friday protested attempts to return a road to its pre-Nazi-era name of Jewish Street, with several shouting, ``The Jews have made us suffer enough.’’
I lived in Berlin for two years, 92 to 94. The further away time moved from 1989, when the Wall fell, them more resentful the Berliniers became at our continued presence. How quickly they forget, not just that American, British and French soldiers acted to buffer their little German asses from the Communists for over 40 years, but that THEY destroyed the JEWS, not vice versa. The Americans lived in Zehlendorf, a prosperous area of Berlin where many wealthy Jews lived before the war. The German city managers, in 1994, asked my Officer in Charge how quickly we could move out of housing, because they wanted to sell and rent the property and wanted us gone. My OIC said, Not so fast. First we’ll look to make sure there are no surviving relatives of the Jewish families who lived in the houses, the ones you tried to exterminate in WWII. If no relatives are alive, then we’ll talk about returning the houses.Priceless moment. I wish he was in charge of this mess; he would have given these Ugly Berliners short shrift. Let’s just pray that the ‘silent majority’ felt more humanely.
