New Zealand, my home for two wonderful years, was the first country in the world to hold remembrance ceremonies today for the 9-11 attack victims. Christchurch Cathedral invited an American musician to play his own tribute. Across the harbour, the Lyttelton residents were a bit more strident and confrontational, but the well-wishers still outnumbered the appeasers. In Wellington, Helen Clark, the prime minister, joined with the American Ambassador in planting two trees at the American Embassy. The soil used was mixed with compost made with the flowers left at the embassy gates a year ago. At the memorial service in Wellington, Ms. Clark read a poem by U.S. poet laureate Bill Collins, which he wrote for a special session of the U.S. Congress last Friday. The text of the poem is here. Thanks to the people throughout the world who were our friends and mourned with us today.

One year later, and the rest of the world has turned schizoid in its perception of Americas struggle thus far. Are we vengeful killers of thousands of innocent Afghanis or a sober, wise superpower? If the Mirror is a microcosm of English thought doubtful, I know then the conflict continues. Personally, Im with the sober, wise superpower group. Andrew, I wish I could share that bottle of wine and introspection with you. We had our moment of silence at 2:45 p.m. at the moment that the U.S. observed theirs. Being so far from home makes it all more surreal, although the scare in Heidelberg on Friday has put us all on edge. Im saying a prayer for the fallen and asking for protection for all of us.

The ever excellent MEMRI, has an encouraging article highlighting the comments of Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. He makes a clear case against Islamic extremists and their beliefs. Makes a striking contrast to these cretins who are gathering today in London.

Jay has an an interesting post on political personality types that makes for interesting reading. I am still not sure whether or not I am a C4 or a C3.

Norwegian Blogger and I are in agreement on how to observe 9/11. I am not going to stop posting because of the date, however I shall only be making this post on the subject. I will be paying my respects with a decent bottle of wine. I shall raise my glass and raise a toast to those who died. It is the way I ended that terrible day a year ago.

Well, now Ive seen everything: Nelson Mandela sneaking in a little racist pointy-the-finger. I dont know, Ive never thought of Israel as white and Iraq as black, but apparently thats the U.S. motivation. After all, that master statesman-cum-inspector Ritter says we dont need to go. Clearly, he and Mandela know best. Oh, and we also ignore the U.N. because a black man is head of it right now. Hey, Mandela, pull your head out of that black and white mirror, there are a lot of colors and shades of gray you need to see before you call our country racist. Maybe since he advocated armed resistance as a solution for South Africa he has a bit more sympathy for the freedom fighters of today, ythink?
