Update: My Def Leppard review is finished and should be up soon, once it’s gone through the editing wringer.

It was nice of Frank to respond to my post on American women. I think he is letting them get off lightly. Blaming “feminism” for the attitude problem is just a way of forwarding blame. I, on the other hand, think feminisim is just being used as an excuse to justify the dire treatment of men by some women. A classic example is the “oppresed woman act” when dumping a bloke; this cliche is getting old fast. (Getting dumped for being too generous (or this is the excuse used) is almost too much to bear.)

One such harpie once told me that she thought she and her sisteren were just making up for thousands of years of ill-treatment by men. Sort of psycological reperations for pass misdeeds, and as lame as the reperations being called for by some black leaders in the US. There is never any excuse for mal-treating someone. The extreme extent of this is the lack of interest in the battered husbands and boyfriends (I was one of them, and most people laughed.) as if caring men have to be killed or beaten senseless to make amends. (I am not talking self-defence, either.) Somehow it is alright for a woman to clobber her boyfriend, but if he hits her back its a brutality, even if she weighs 220 and can bench-press him. Ditto, the almost automatic giving of custody to mothers in divorce cases and the treatment of the fathers thereafter.

There are groups of women trying to counter this sort of attitude. The International Women’s Forum’s magazine is full of articles on just how bad it has gotten in the US. IWF, is of course, the arch-enemy of the mighty N.O.W..They go to great lengths to counter the “all men are potential rapists” pr coming from feminists on US campuses. There is a similar group called RightGrrl.

Update: Jenny McCartney delivers her take on the row in today’s Sunday Telegraph.

Posting might be patchy today as I have to refrain from vomiting as I am subjected to the sycophantic twaddling about that famous fat drug-addict. Even the Telegraph feels the need to mention this icon to bad taste. To be fair, the article is more than a little sarcastic. Elvis is a symbol of middle America and one that I can do without. I was once called unAmerican for not liking Elvis. If idolising a redneck of limited talent who could barely sing, could not act, and died on the bog is a sign of being an American then no wonder I chose not to live there.

Update: The black rock band, Living Colour, expressed their opinion on the matter in the song Elvis is Dead.

Andrew’s a bit wrong in attributing this self-righteous behaviour exclusively to American women… it’s quite apparent in some British women as well. It’s the upshot of feminism: while you can be just as accomplished as any guy with your skills, you can also be just as much of an ass, if not more so. Even some of the founders of the feminist movement are claiming it’s gone too far. A few months ago, Doris Lessing claimed that some women were using feminism to slag well-intentioned men off, to split the infinitive.

Frankly, it can be a bit confusing for us men at times. The Evening Standard reported on a study showing that while 9 out of 10 women expected men to hold the door for them, only 3 out of 10 accepted a man picking up the restaurant tab, and out of the other 7, 5 would be insulted by the man getting the bill. What’s a man to do? These days, showing chivalry can cause women to brand you as self-centred, demeaning, etc, while not showing it can lead to the same accusations. Of course, with this type, nothing is ever her fault. So what’s to make of the ‘modern woman’? Her unhappiness is her fault, given that she either avoids anyone not good enough for her, or mangles her paramour after he makes the slightest error. This is not to say that all successful women fit this profile, but quite a few of them tend to.

With a sizeable portion of both men and women these days acting like such, no wonder Bridget Jones’ Diary and About a Boy are hits. After all, doesn’t BJD emphasize that while nice guys may finish last and not be as trendy as others, they’re usually the best match? For some reason, Paltrow and her ilk seem to believe that men don’t have the same categories to choose from. Andrew’s right about one thing, though: leave them be. They’re not worth the trouble. (I’d advise the same to any woman who found a man acting the same way.)
