In a stroke of genius, Apple has decided to annoy millions of loyal users. In its infinite wisdom. they have decided to ditch their old web-mail service and replace it with .Mac. Alas, the former was free, the latter is not, and the latter has all kinds of “features” most people won’t or can’t use. To make matters even worse, Apple has given all of us with mac.com addys until the end of September to cough up or we lose our addys. Anyone watching the keynote will have heard the dead silence that followed Jobs’ announcement of this idiotic move.
Apple seems to forget that most of the “services” they offer are almost totally useless on 56k. They forget that the rest of the world has to pay local phone charges when online.
Why Apple did not allow people to have a mac.com address for free with no other services I will never know? Now all of us who depend on their forwarding service will have to change our addys once again. Anyone with business cards, like me, are now out the cost of a new set of cards.
It will be interesting to see if there is a mass revolt by Mac users about this idiotic move by Apple. Overall, though, it was a pretty good keynote, if a little short of new hardware. Alas, most people will remember Apple announcing this act of corporate stupidity rather than anything else, rather than OSX 10.2 or the new Imac.
Why must Apple always hurt the ones who love them?
