London today is at a standstill because the RMT union has decided to strike and close the underground. They claim their action is over safety on the tube (read: privitisation, which will mean the drek that is the staff might actually get sacked). Alas, it looks rather dodgy since council workers struck yesterday (see how they are “suffering” here) and one of the major unions just elected a former member of the Communist Party, Derek Simpson, as its leader. The unions in the UK are flexing their muscles, threatening a “summer of discontent.” Do these people really hate Labour so much that they plan to deliver number 10 into the hands of the Conservatives? Are they that stupid? Well, yes, it seems the unions are that dumb. More power to them; strike as much as you like and often as you like.
Today is one of those times when working from home has even more going for it.
Update: Alice Thompson muses today about 70’s style strikes. And here Leo McKinstry does as well.
