Rick over at Smart Genes has posted a short piece about De Soto. Even better, he was kind enough to clue me in; I am glad to be able to link to his interesting site.

Politicalia is itching to make a come-back after being in near statis for a few months. I used to post there and go to its forums, however a blog called Samizdata and then this one distracted me. I am now back as a contributor there, so expect at least two new pieces from me in the next day or so. I urge you to head over, register, and post in the forums.

A Gentle Smile From The Den….....
MommaBear seldom ventures to address philosophical or religious questions or theories in public; she holds very personal views on these topics, instead. However, as a part of that reticence, she also has great appreciation for those who do put forth well-written expositions on these topics.
In the Daily Telegraph, Janet Dailey has laid down a beautiful retort to a possible proposal to “dress down” the Anglican Church. This concept of removing all sense of majesty and signs of strength from those who deliver the message of the Church is but one more sign of the dumbing down of humanity. Turning a religious institution into just another coffee-house would be a huge loss to the ideal of trying to make the world a better place.

I knew I liked this guy. He has written a piece as a hoax that fooled quite a few people. Even better, one of the players in the piece was named after a character in Lovecraft’s Call of Cthulhu. He even uses Abdul al-Azrad, author of the Necromonicon, as his Arab protagonist. Those wishing to find out what all this Cthulhu stuff is about might want to start with Shoggoth.net. You might just recognise one of the contributing writers to that site.
What I am bummed about is the fact that I missed this piece first time around.

Mark Stein has written an extremely funny piece about the coverage of the LAX shooting. If only I could get my sarcastic rants to flow as well; Mark’s rant is one of sheer genius.
Via the delightful Andrew Sullivan.
A more serious take on this from John O’Sullivan. Found via Pejman

It has been a rather odd day for me today; I find myself awakening to the thought that I actually agree with a new policy from Blunkett’s mouth. They have decided to re-categorise cannabis (da ganga) all over Britain. While this is a silly half-way house on the way to legalisation, it is a step in the right direction. It is unfortunate to see the Tories (and others) bleating on about his it threatens “young people”. This is especially unfortunate after both he and his Shadow Minister for Youth, spent a decent amount of time explaining to a group of graduates (and me) how the Tory Party wishes to reach out to the young. Sounding like a pushy nanny that assumes no intelligence or self-control in British citizens does not impress anyone. To his credit, I don’t remember his wheeling out the “cannabis as gateway drug” line, which everyone knows is total bullshit.
No one under the age of 40 believes it when it is claimed that if you smoke a joint you will be doing crack or heroin within a month. It seems Westminster Council is throwing a wobbly about this new policy as well. Why don’t they legalise cannabis, give it to tobacco companies, and take it away from the dealers?
BBC News will be covering the announcement later this afternoon.
NB: I am not a regular or even casual user of cannabis, so this is not in my self-interest, but a matter of principle.
Update: The Telegraph agrees with my take on the move. This is a lame half-way house that will please no one. Boris adds his scribblings to the debate, and it’s funny too.

Fusilier Pundit has posted a query to Mommabear about rock music. Fusilier seems to be a bit confused about who is the rock expert on DtD. This is not surprising, since I have been asked a few times if I am Mommabear as well. I can assure all of you, Mommabear is a living breathing person and edits both Dodgeblog and DtD, posting on both blogs as well.

A Tiny Sneer From The Den….....
Referring back to previous mentions of the advert about the possible upcoming campaign to compel the U.K. to adopt the €uro, replacing the £, MommaBear found this post at Live from Brussels claiming that the battle against the €uro is already lost. Citing a little-known Godwin’s Law, it is argued that the introduction of Hitler has doomed the anti-campaign. However, a careful reading of the entire text of the law can well lead one to believe that the inclusion of Hitler early on will, instead, invoke the Codicil to that law. In any event, the battle lines have indeed now been drawn by the solicitors.
