As far as I can tell Tom Utley has lost his mind. First we have his blithering on about football as the height of human achievement and togetherness, then this. Does he honestly think that the following is a rational statement?
”...if the war between Hitler and Stalin represented the nadir of human civilisation, then tennis, Tim Henman and the Surrey way of life that he epitomises represent its zenith.”
If Tennis, a game which is so boring it’s criminal, is the “zenith” of human civilisation then I might have to join the extreme enviromental movement like this lot. or just top myself in some other spectacular way. (Preferably one that might get me enough press that I can actually get my other novels published!) Why are people like Utley (and others) trying to make sports out to be something it isn’t? Pinheads who see sport as something it’s not are akin to collegiate feminists who seem to see a phalus in everything. (A great one: Rock music is sexist and offensive because the guitar is phalus and playing it mimics masturbation. (So what does that make women guitar players, I asked.) Cue incensed feminazis storming off and swearing.)
Does the expression: “its ONLY a f*****g game” mean anything to this guy?
