Sen. Chuck Schumer and Neo-Nazis as political bedfellows? According to Richard Poe that is what is happening over legislation against so-called hate radio. His article is as funny as it is surprising.

From the Groniad via Peter:

Richard Sennett: “The job of the state is to make sure that everyone has enough to eat, can get medical care when they need it, can get to work without risk”.

No Richard, the job of the state is to get the hell out of the way so that honest, hard-working citizens can get on with their lives and enjoy the fruits of their labour without the state taking half (or more) their income. They deserve to live in a state where criminals are jailed but the rest of society is not penalised for the behaviour of a small number of cretins.

Statism only serves one purpose; to increase the size of the state by increasing the number of regulations strangling the economy and stealing as much taxpayers money as possible.

In short: Statism Sucks!

Co-habitation in France is over, Chirac and his “right-wing” coalition have managed to have an absolute majority for once. Whether or not this will mean that the government of France actually come to grips with the country’s problems is another matter. The Socialists and their Allies were well and truely stuffed, as were the National Front. If only Chirac was actually right-of-centre in the Anglosphere sense.

Despite the alleged threat of the National Front the turn-out was a record low at %71. Obviously the voters realised something a great deal of commentators were not keen to admit, the Le Pen vote was a protest.

Ok this is really getting nuts, the USA beat Mexico in the World Cup. France, Portugal and now Mexico, what is going on? The only bummer for the Yanks is that they face Germany next. I would love to see the US beat the Germans, most amusing would be an England vs US match. I know who I will root for, wonder how the Anglosphere will split on that one? Still it is nice to think I have a second choice if my prefered team loses.

Jason Soon pointed me to this great article on the so-called rise of the extreme-right/Nazis in Europe. The article written by Brendan O’Neill in Spiked (nee Living Marxism) is a thorough analysis of just how hysterical the political elites in Europe are on the subject.

There is no rise of the extreme-right in Europe, it is a smoke-screen so that those in power now can wallow in their current navel-gazing. The tactic probably would be still working if had not been for the assisination of Pim Fortuyn and the media interest that followed.
