The Sunday Telegraph has a piece by Susan Herbert about the pop/rock concert that occurred last Monday. She details some of the whingeing that can be heard from certain “politics on sleeve” type musicians like Billy Bragg (left-wing, of course). His type bemoan the loss of “message” rock and curse the performers on Monday for selling out. Unsuccessful has-beens like Bragg, who wail about the alleged lack of “angst rock”, show their true colours again and again. The rockers and popsters who played the palace were honoured to be asked to play.

Susan points out, as have I, that the older rockers blew the popsters off the stage. The gig showed how pathetic some pop groups are these days, even with all the tricks of the trade (vocal loops, backing tapes, a stunning “house” band and back-up singers who were respected solo vocalists) at their behest. Even Sir Cliff “I’m not gay, really” Richard showed he had more talent and stage presence than the dire Starsailor or Mysteeq. The gig showed just how rich a rock/pop history this country and just how bad a state pop is in right now. Maybe next time it might be a good idea to have seperate pop and rock concerts. That might give the popsters a chance to shine. I mean, wouldn’t it look terrible to have an even older Ozzy blow a whole new crop of popsters off the stage?

PS: Isn’t is disturbing to see that Tony Iommi never seems to age?
