Tom Utley continues the spew about the importance of football in today’s DT. I was kind of hoping the DT would be a respite from this type of crap. The World Cup has, as do all sports, one purpose: to make lots of money for some people (not a bad thing of course).

The trouble is, major events like the World Cup cost the country financially. When all the supporters take/skive time off work they are costing the economy money. These people will cost the British economy 2 bill in lost work, and for what gain? Besides Umbro and all the other companies jumping on the bandwagon, who else benefits? No one, of course, and it costs non-supporters money and time. Anyone skiving off work to watch the World Cup should be fired.

I mean, for god’s sake, two countries are on the brink of possible nuclear war, and was does the press lead on? The damn World Cup, of course. Well, a cloud of fallout drifting over Korea and Japan might wake people up, too late of course, but it would be amusing to watch the panic.

Update: Andrew Sullivan takes the piss out of the American attitude towards football (soccer).
